We are currently looking for a Mechanical Designer / Finite Element Analysis Engineer to join our team in Richmond, BC.

PURPOSE OF POSITION

Reporting Directly to the Engineering Project Lead, the Designer / FEA Engineer is responsible for performing design work under the supervision of a Sr. Designer, Design Lead and/or Project Lead. The candidate is responsible to produce manufacturing / customer drawings with accuracy and Bills of Material related to the company's products as per the latest company design standards/guidelines and industry and customer specifications using the designated CAD/CAM software We currently use MicroStation and SolidWorks and NX (CAD/CAM) and SAP (ERP). In addition, the candidate is also responsible to perform finite element analysis for structural/mechanical systems subjected to static, dynamic, and thermal loading conditions, analyzing, and interpreting the results and providing the optimal design solutions.

TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES

SAFETY:

  • Abides by all customer and Nortrak safety policies and procedures while on customer & Nortrak sites.
  • Ensures design specifications of drawings meet customer and Nortrak safety standards.

QUALITY:

  • Produce practical designs and other design components (BOMs, ITPs, etc.) for tooling and Nortrak product.
  • Work with a high degree of accuracy developed through knowledge of the application, manufacture and service requirements, customer and Nortrak standards and industry state of practice.
  • Stay current with company manufacturing processes and product/industry knowledge. Continues to develop their knowledge of Nortrak products, customer and Nortrak standards and industry state of practice. Responsible for being aware of design standards and assigned customers.
  • Works closely with Manufacturing to address design/manufacturability issues.
  • Assists and/or creates Customer Request for Information (RFI) to clarify information needed for projects, by including relevant information, customer specifications, and/or details required.
  • Assists and/or creates customer submittals for projects.
  • Updating and revising drawings and BOM's as needed and/or directed.
  • Designer checks their own work for accuracy before submitting their designs to other personnel for official checking and approving.

ON-TIME DELIVERY:

  • Maximizes utilization of time to complete projects accurately and meeting department and company commitment dates.
  • Creating project pre-orders and long lead time items in order to meet project delivery dates and updating throughout the project as needed.
  • Understands and knows the due date of when the assigned task is to be completed.
  • Contributes to achieving project milestones and key performance indicators.
  • Works within well-established practices and clearly defined scope of work.

COST:

  • Works as a member of a design team and cooperates with Nortrak Management in an effective manner to produce designs efficiently and on budget with a high degree of manufacturability.
  • Understands and knows the budgeted hours per task assigned to him/her.

PEOPLE:

  • Shares information with and encourages and collaborations with other team members.
  • Develops close working relationships between both internal and external customers and suppliers.
  • Assists production with technical questions, support, guidance, and problem solving.
  • Works closely with senior staff and members of the Engineering team.

ENVIRONMENTAL:

  • Adhere to Nortrak's Environmental Procedures, Practices and Policies.

DESIGN:

FEA:

  • Perform finite element analysis for structural/mechanical systems subjected to static, dynamic, and thermal loading conditions.
  • Create finite element models of various parts with respect to linear and non-linear structural domain.
  • Check the FEA feasibility in structural, thermal, and vibration domain, and perform analytical studies for analyzing the mechanism of kinematics, dynamics, and force analysis.
  • Develop and run FEA models for LMC (Least material condition) and damage tolerance.
  • Perform Finite Element Analysis of structural/mechanical systems to ensure compliance with applicable codes (ASTM, ASME, ANSI, CSA, etc.).
  • Perform hand calculations and/or experiments as required to verify the results of the FEA.
  • Coordinating with the staff involved in test and analysis of finite element modeling, providing actual solution to FEA model, and interpreting the analysis results accordingly for providing the best possible solution.
  • Interpreting analysis results with respect to results obtained by lab testing procedures, converting these results into practical design templates based on given geometry model, and providing support to designing and certification groups in optimizing the designs using FEA results.
  • Prepare reports clearly summarizing the results of the engineering assessment and FEA and reviewing all project-related analysis results for ensuring the accuracy of project reports.
  • Solve engineering problems that may be process or design related.
  • Apply engineering knowledge to the design and development of new products and processes.
  • Generate design concepts, prototype builds, standard operating procedures, and transfer of product to manufacturing.
  • Interface with R&D project teams and provide excellent customer service to achieve program key milestones and deliverables.
  • Serve as a key member and apply engineering principles to solve complex technical problems related to stress and deformation of structures and mechanical systems.
  • Work closely with the other members of the engineering team to provide appropriate and constructive project recommendations based on engineering analysis.
  • Other duties as required.

QUALITIFCATIONS:

EDUCATION:

  • Post-Secondary education with diploma or degree in Mechanical, Structural, or another relevant Engineering field.
  • Professional Engineering (P.Eng.) designation or EIT registration with EGBC or another province.

FIELD OF EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum five years experience in the engineering field.
  • Minimum three years experience in advanced Finite Element Analysis.
  • Experience working in a manufacturing environment an asset.
  • Sound knowledge of several areas of mechanical design principles and analysis.
  • Sound knowledge of stress analysis and failure theories.
  • Demonstrated experience with commercial finite element analysis and structural analysis packages (e.g., NX Simcenter, ANSYS, MSC Nastran, COMSOL, etc.).
  • Good experience in a 3D Modeling environment, preferably Siemens NX.
  • Strong analytical reasoning and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent Organizational and time management skills.
  • Demonstrate strong and effective verbal and communication skills.
  • Must be able to work effectively in a team and individually.
  • Able to prioritize and execute multiple tasks in an efficient manner.

TECHNICAL SKILLS:

  • The ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Familiar with Siemens Teamcenter and SAP would be an asset.

PHYSCIAL DEMANDS:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Occasional standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or climbing.
  • Must be able to lift or handle up to 25 pounds at times.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Occasional travel may be required which includes walking, standing, sitting and driving from short to long periods of time.

SALARY:

  • $80,000/year - $100,000/year
