Quality Control/ WELder (Night Shift) (Monday Thursday 10hr shifts)

The Quality Control (QC)/ Welder role plays a crucial role in ensuring all fabricated steel components meet the companys high-quality standards and industry regulations. This position is hands-on and requires direct, on-the-tools experience in welding and fabrication. The QC/ Welder must possess strong inspection skills, a keen attention to detail, and a deep understanding of fabrication processes to assess parts and assemblies accurately.

A key aspect of this role is the ability to step in and assist with production tasks as needed. You will be expected to work alongside the shop foreman, fabrication welders, and quality control management, ensuring all components meet the required specifications and standards. Your ability to jump in and support the production team with tasks such as fitting and welding is essential, especially during busy periods or when additional help is required. Flexibility and hands-on involvement in shop activities are vital for the success of the team and the company.

Reporting to: Shop Foreman

Key Responsibilities

Perform quality inspections on welded structural steel components and assemblies.

Fit up/ welding of structural components may be required depending on workflow or demand.

Verify dimensions, tolerances, and finishes to ensure compliance with blueprints and technical specifications.

Conduct visual inspections to identify defects, inconsistencies, or deviations in welds and assemblies.

Assess weld quality and identify defects such as lack of fusion, undercut, porosity, cracks, and spatter.

Use precision measurement tools (e.g., calipers, measuring tapes, welding gauges) to ensure accuracy.

Document inspection results and report non-conformities to the appropriate team members.

Collaborate with shop management and quality control teams to resolve quality issues and improve processes.

Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and provide feedback to enhance fabrication quality.

Ensure compliance with welding codes and industry standards (e.g., CSA W59, S16).

Maintain a safe and organized work environment, following company safety policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Proven experience in quality control within a welding or structural steel environment.

Welding Supervisor Certification or CWB Level 1 Welding Inspector certification preferred (but not required).

Prior hands-on experience within a steel fabrication setting (ie: grinders, GMAW, saws, etc.)

Strong understanding of welding procedures, techniques, and industry standards (e.g., CSA W59, S16).

Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and welding symbols.

Proficient in using measuring instruments and inspection tools for structural steel.

Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills.

Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively.

Ability to work independently and manage responsibilities on a night shift schedule.
