The Role:
Reporting to the Director of Finance, the Controller will manage the day-to-day accounting functions. This includes producing financial statements, managing AP, AR, cash, tax, etc. The Controller will also be expected to strategically introduce best practices to the Accounting team and interact cross-functionally with other departments to assess needs, introduce controls, and meet organizational goals.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain timely and accurate financial statements and reports that are appropriate for the users and in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP);
- Develop, implement, and ensure compliance with internal financial and accounting policies and procedures;
- Ensure that all statutory requirements of the organization are met including withholding payments (CPP, EI), Income Tax, Goods and Service Tax;
- Document and maintain complete and accurate supporting information for all financial transactions;
- Review monthly results and implement monthly variance reporting as compared to budget;
- Reconcile bank accounts and manage cash flow and prepare cash flow forecast in accordance with policy;
- Develop and maintain financial accounting system for cash management, accounts payable, accounts receivable, credit control, petty cash, and company credit cards;
- Preparation of sales and profitability forecasts and assist plant manager in preparing capital expenditure requests;
- Review month end and year end closing for timeliness and accuracy;
- Continuous Improvement of the Accounting Department and the services delivered to the internal and external customers;
- Interface with internal and external auditors;
- Recommend improvements to accounting controls and procedures;
- Assist in the preparation of the annual budget and periodic forecasts;
- Coordinate annual physical inventory;
- Manage the accounting operations including the review and posting of journal entries, payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, daily production entry and statutory reporting;
- Establish and monitor internal controls to ensure that accounting activities are in accordance with established legal regulatory and company policies and procedures;
- Collaborate with various internal teams on product pricing, costing and margins;
- Maintain detailed product costing information as a basis for various analysis and decision making;
- Implement and maintain systems for monitoring costing information by activity, category, and product;
- Implement and maintain variance analyses for productivity, efficiency, and spending in order to provide operational managers with feedback on the activities under their responsibility;
- Review accounts receivable aging each month and proactively follow-up on collections issues;
- Collaborate with Leadership team and cross-functional teams in creating yearly financial and operational budgets;
- Supporting in the development of SOPs;
- Other relevant projects and tasks as assigned by the Director of Finance.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelors Degree in Accounting of Finance or related fields preferred;
- CPA designation is required;
- 5-7 years work experience as a Controller in a manufacturing environment;
- Experience in handling multiple ERP systems across group companies;
- Experience in migrating and transitioning into new ERP system will be considered an asset;
- Organized, analytical and business acumen;
- Demonstrates high attention to detail;
- Ability to identify, formalize, and problem solve business needs;
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
- Must be team oriented and an independent self-starter;
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality;
- Expertise in MS Office and advanced Excel skills.
