Economic Development services are provided to the Brooks Newell Region through a regional economic development team that focuses on business retention and expansion, investment attraction, workforce development, and tourism. The City of Brooks, as part of the Brooks Newell Region, requires one (1) Economic Development Summer Student, in the Planning & Community Development Department. This is aTerm Position that will run from approximately May 5 until August 29, 2025.

Purpose:
This position is responsible for supporting economic development staff with a number of projects and initiatives including promoting and ensuring economic development, business retention and regional growth within the Brooks Newell Region. Reporting to the Manager of Community Development, this position provides support and assistance to the Joint Services Committee through the implementation of the Economic Development Teams strategic plan.
Roles & Responsibilities:
- Promotes and markets the Brooks Newell Region to encourage business development, attract new investment and promote a positive business culture in the Brooks Newell Region;
- Works to actively promote and celebrate local businesses and organizations to encourage shopping local and business retention within the Region;
- Develops and produces informational and promotional materials as required;
- Project management and implementation of a business marketing initiative;
- Preparing content for marketing material, newsletters, social media and other outreach initiatives;
- Expanding the Brooks Newell Region photo and video library for promotional purposes;
- Conducting social media contests and data collection;
- Undertake data entry and verification of business and client databases and directories;
- In collaboration with the Communications Officer, provide media information promoting a positive image of the Brooks Newell Region;
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education & Experience:
- Enrolled in a post-secondary degree, diploma or certificate in Economic Development, Marketing, Communications, Business Administration, or other related area of study;
- Advanced public relations, written, and oral communication skills;
- Graphic design, digital media, and/or photography skills would be an asset;
- Attention to detail, strong prioritizing and multi-tasking abilities;
- Ability to research and analyze information from a wide variety of sources;
- Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding departmental and municipal matters;
- Excellent problem-solving skills;
- Excellent reading, writing and verbal communication skills;
- Excellent customer service skills and interpersonal skills;
- Proficiency with computer applications, including Microsoft Office and Adobe;
- Class 5 Drivers License; and
- Subject to a criminal record check.
Compensation:
The hourly rate for this position is$21.00 CAD per hour, DOE. The regular working hours are Monday to Friday, from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. The successful applicant will also receive a free family membership to the JBS Canada Centre during the term of employment.
A clean criminal records check and driver abstract will be required before an offer of employment is presented to the successful applicant.
