COMPENSATION: $47,864 - $50,026 annually prorated

To help fulfill its mission, LOFT is hiring a Full-time Permanent Overnight Worker.
**Please note that this is an OVERNIGHT shift (10pm – 8am)**
Job Summary
To provide overnight assistance and support to clients living with mental illnesses in the LOFT Community Services Program residences.
What You Will Do
The position works on its own to support the program and clients/residents, thereby creating a healthy, safe and secure environment, by:
  • Building a rapport with each individual to enable them to meet the daily requirements of their housing environment and a healthy lifestyle; assisting with client routines, maintaining a general awareness of the activities or whereabouts of residents in the program site, monitoring and reporting on their health and wellbeing, assisting with medications; resolving issues related to shared living, mediating conflicts between clients, or between residents and neighbours, following-up to ensure satisfactory resolution; carrying out crisis intervention activities with serious or unexpected problems;
  • Maintaining the operation of the program and property by conducting security, fire, health and safety checks; increasing clients' awareness of safety issues; administering basic first aid as required; activating the appropriate emergency procedures or “on-call” system for emergencies or serious occurrences; identifying potential issues and communicating to day staff, or noting incidents as required; documenting all overnight activity, incidents or events in appropriate logs and files;
  • Assisting clients with physical disabilities or chronic illnesses by providing care in their daily activities in such areas as feeding, meal preparation, moving or transfers, toileting or incontinence and personal hygiene (grooming, bathing, shaving) when requested or required;
  • Clean and assist clients to clean designated areas of the residence, such as offices, bathrooms and kitchen by sweeping, dusting, washing floors, vacuuming, removing garbage as required or in accordance with established routines and schedules; spot cleaning areas that require immediate attention; washing/drying laundry; providing basic maintenance such as: removing snow and ice from pathways/driveways in winter, changing fuses, light bulbs, etc., reporting on required repairs;
  • Participating in the administration of the program by completing and maintaining the required records such as client files, activity sheets, incident reports, etc. In accordance with established procedures; participating actively as a team member in program delivery by providing support and consultation to colleagues, participating in meetings, planning and evaluation initiatives, committees, events or other group activities which promote the wellbeing of the client and the smooth operation of the Program; providing other related assistance as required.
What You Bring:
Must Haves
  • An understanding of harm reduction, the logic model and psychosocial rehabilitation principles as acquired through a relevant degree/diploma in human services.
  • Experience working with the client population in order to apply the theories to practical settings.
  • Knowledge of the issues faced by vulnerable adults with special needs, which will include addictions, cognitive impairments, and low income.
  • An understanding of the therapeutic relationship
  • A sound understanding of health and safety standards.
  • Experience in working with limited supervision but as part of a team of professionals.
  • An ability to negotiate with clients on goals and priorities.
  • Sensitivity, with an ability to interact with clients in a positive and supportive manner.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and counselling skills are essential to work in a team environment and to engage the clients in some highly personal areas, such as developing healthy living skills, life skills and in maintaining interpersonal relationships.
  • Good crisis intervention, responding and problem solving skills are required to anticipate and deal with client issues.
  • Computer literacy sufficient to produce and maintain files, records or statistical information. Written skills used in keeping records or updating logs.
  • Good analytical, time management and organizational skills to contribute to program planning and to coordinate and follow up on issues or activities with clients.
Nice-to-Have
  • First Aid and CPR certification an asset
  • Fluency in a second language an asset
Work Environment:
  • Staff will be required to work in client rooms and may be exposed to second hand smoke.
  • Physical ability to perform light cleaning and lifting, (e.g. washing floors, dusting, moving furniture, removing snow/garbage).
  • Walk up and down stairs, cleaning.
  • Physically able to assist client with feeding, meal preparation, moving or transfers, toileting or incontinence and personal hygiene (grooming, bathing, and shaving.)
