Reporting directly to the General Manager, Eskay Creek, the Operations Manager will be responsible for overseeing pit operations and earthworks construction related to the Eskay Creek Revitalization Project. This role will lead the site-based teams and contractors in ensuring all project safety regulations and health and safety procedures are implemented for execution of work at Eskay Creek. The Operations Manager will be responsible for the day-to-day construction activities and short-term construction planning.
Position Responsibilities (including but not limited to):
- Act as one of the primary site leaders for the Eskay Creek Revitalization Project.
- Manage, plan and execute all open-pit operations including drill and blast.
- Manage, plan and execute project construction including road construction, crusher operations, civil earthworks construction and water management construction.
- Directly manage the overall earthworks construction schedule and budget to accurately track and report project progress.
- Regularly supply feedback for Engineering design, project planning and mine planning with overall Skeena team.
- Work directly with Mobile Maintenance team to ensure heavy equipment is repaired and maintained as per Skeena's mobile maintenance program.
- Manage multiple workfronts to ensure they are adequately resourced and all environmental and safety regulations are met.
- Oversee a large team of staff and contractors to deliver project construction for Eskay Creek on multiple rotations for both day and night shifts.
- Act as the owner's representative for all facets of project and program execution.
- Lead Project and Operations Engineers to track all project metrics and ensure construction adherence to project schedule.
- Review project cost reports, investigate reasons for variance, and support implementation of revised project forecasts or Project Change Notices (PCN's) when required
- Review project and productivity data for operations regularly to reduce costs and improve operational standards while reporting out performance metrics to Senior Leadership.
- Instill and drive a strong, positive safety culture in all workers at Eskay Creek.
- Comply with the requirements of the health and safety guidelines, policies, and rules for the Eskay Creek site.
- Ensure escalation procedures and incident reporting procedures are implemented and maintained to meet contractual standards.
- Provide guidance and oversight to direct reports to support growth and development, driving performance excellence.
- Resolve conflicts amongst team members; provide regular coaching, feedback, and recognition.
- Provide senior management with weekly reports covering safety, progress, and operating issues.
- Work with and communicate closely with Technical Services, Site Maintenance, Mobile Maintenance, Health and Safety, Environmental and Construction & Engineering teams.
- Work directly with and assist in all reporting regarding senior Skeena management, vendors, third party consultants, community stakeholders and outside regulators.
- Directly manage, investigate and build-out corrective actions for any safety or environmental issues that arise on site without undue delay.
- Promote team building at all levels, and a respectful cross-cultural work environment.
- All other duties as required by the Company.
The Ideal Candidate:
- Must have a minimum of 10 years direct supervisory/management experience in heavy civil and/or mining.
- Demonstrated experience in mine planning, scheduling, construction leadership and drill & blast is required.
- Bachelor's degree in Mining or Civil Engineering (preferred).
- Valid BC Mines Shift Boss Certification.
- Must have a Valid Driver's License.
- Experience working in a remote mining or industrial environment is required.
Skills/Experience:
- Expert in heavy civil and mining construction.
- Experience or demonstrated capability to lead large, multi-discipline crews.
- Detailed understanding of technical aspects of civil and mining, including reading drawings, following QA/QC programs, and survey control.
- Experience in contract management, cost management, budget supervision, customer service and stakeholder management.
- Strong computer skills in MS Office Suite and 3D design software.
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize while under pressure.
- Self-motivated, ability to work with minimal supervision.
Working Conditions:
This is a site-based camp job at Eskay Creek Mine site. Additionally, the job is in a fast-paced working environment, with having to manage multiple competing priorities. This position involves working at a remote mine site on a 15 days on/13 days off rotation.
The Eskay Creek Revitalization Project is located within the Coast Mountains of Northwestern British Columbia and Tahltan Territory. Ground transportation will be provided from local communities to the Eskay Creek Site facilities. For those applicants located elsewhere in western Canada, flight transportation from major urban centers will be provided to the Terrace or Smithers airports, from which shuttles will provide transportation to the Eskay Creek Camp facilities. Travel time and expenses are subject to Skeena's Travel Policy.
There will be exposure to extreme temperatures in all seasons including working outdoors in snow, mud, ice, and water conditions, walking to and from different locations on uneven ground, prolonged periods of standing and physically handling/lifting/moving heavy objects.
