Job Description

We are currently hiring for a permanent full-time Agricultural Officer - Weed Inspection. Reporting to the Assistant Agricultural Fieldman (AAF), this position is responsible for coordinating all weed inspection activities as set out in the Weed Control Act and governed by policy. Leading a team of 8, this position ensures consistency in methodology and approach to handling noxious and prohibited-noxious weed issues on private lands.

Job Duties and Tasks:

  • Assist Assistant Agricultural Fieldman with Staff scheduling and supervise seasonal staff
  • Assist the Director, Agricultural Services (also act as Agricultural Fieldman) and Assistant Agricultural Fieldman with orientation and training of seasonal staff
  • Manage and supervise weed inspecting seasonal team
    • Performance management and appraisal of staff supervised
    • Maintain employee work schedules
    • Provide oversight and direction
    • Recruitment/interviews for new seasonal hires.
  • Assist and perform various Weed Inspector duties
  • Complete administrative duties including:
    • Arranging for courier delivery/pick-up
    • Arranging for equipment/supplies required for the program
    • Maintaining Electronic filing systems and assisting in maintaining Ag filing system as needed
    • Responding to complaints from members of the public
    • Assisting ratepayers with issues related to the program
    • Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Agricultural Fieldman
  • Assist Director, Agricultural Services with Weed Notices
    • Help prepare Weed Notices
    • Host weekly meeting and bring committee up to date
    • Deliver weed notices by hand and registered mail
Qualifications
  • Must have a High School Diploma; Post-secondary Agriculture education and/or other agriculture related certifications preferred
  • Pesticide Applicator's license would be an asset
  • Must possess and maintain current Alberta driver's license
  • Satisfactory driver's abstract on an annual basis
  • Must be physically fit and able to lift up to 40 pounds on own
  • Supervisory experience

Hours of work: Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (40 hours per week). Hours may vary based on operational needs.

Work Environment: This role is performed in the field and also in-person in an office environment.

Pay rate: $46.86 to $55.13 per hour.
