Position Description

The Ottawa Newcomer Clinic (ONHC) is a program of Somerset West Community Health Centre. Somerset West Community Health Centre is a well-established, non-profit, multi-service center providing health, social and community outreach services with an emphasis on health promotion. ONHC is looking for an experienced Medical Office Assistant to work in a complex and busy medical setting, serving a diverse multicultural and socio-economic clientele. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, scheduling appointments, answering phones, medical documentation management, processing mail, scanning, and faxing.

Position Requirements Education:

  • Post-secondary training for medical office assistant
  • 2-3 years experience in a clinical setting

Key Competencies:

  • 2 years experience in a community-based setting
  • Knowledge of the Canadian heath care system & social determinants of health
  • Basic health assessment and interventions, as appropriate
  • Knowledge of PS Suites an asset
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Sensitivity to and passion about multicultural issues
  • Awareness related to cultural competence
  • Knowledge of related community resources
  • Ability to liaise with external parties and to advocate for clients

Linguistic Profile:

  • Fluency in English, written and spoken mandatory
  • Fluency in French is highly desirable
  • Other languages an asset
