AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY:
The Indigenous Family Support Workers primary responsibility is to provide a range of direct services and programming to children (ages 0-6) and their families with the following objectives: cultural development and retention, child development and nutrition, parenting skills and community development. The Indigenous Family Support Worker will ensure the Indigenous Family Support Program addresses Community Action Program for Children (CAPC) objectives and priorities which involve the provision of community-based activities and services that are culturally competent, complement and link to existing services to build service capacity at the community level.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Preferred Early Childhood Education diploma or equivalent in Social Service or Education fields and/or a minimum of two years work experience.
  • Knowledge of child development theories and practices, emerging trends in early childhood education, determinants of health, and supportive, preventative programming.
  • Ability to effectively interact and relate to children and their families in a developmentally appropriate manner.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, policies and procedures to ensure that children are supervised and safe at all times.
  • Ability to lift / carry children and ability to supervise children required.
  • Knowledge and awareness of Indigenous culture and history, with particular emphasis on family violence, child welfare, the impacts of trauma, Indigenous youth engagement and community outreach; knowledge of an Indigenous language(s) will be considered an asset. Ability to engage people to build trust and rapport; effective verbal and listening communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office including database applications.
  • Excellent case and file management skills, stress management and time management skills; ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Group facilitation, team building and decision-making skills; ability to problem solve and take initiative.
  • Effective crisis intervention skills.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends. Valid First Aid / CPR Certificate and Safe Food Handling certification is an asset.
  • A clear criminal reference check (CPIC) and Vulnerable Sector Clearance is a condition of employment.
  • Must have a valid drivers license and reliable transportation. Will require a valid Drivers Abstract upon hiring.
