ABOUT WILLIAMS LAKE FIRST NATION (WLFN)

The Williams Lake First Nation (WLFN), or the Texelcemc (people of WLFN) have belonged to the Secwepemc (or Shuswap) Nation for over 6500 years. Today, the WLFN community includes a growing population of over 800 registered members who live on reserve in Sugar Cane, in nearby Williams Lake, BC, and across the globe.

POSITION

Under the direction of the Recreation Manager, the After-School Program Coordinator will be responsible for the development, implementation, promotion, and evaluation of a variety of new and current community-based recreation programs and after school activities and programs under the guidelines of existing partnershipsincluding the Right to Play organization. The After School/Youth Leadership Program activities are for children ages 6 and up. As an advocate for healthy families and communities, the After-School Program Coordinator possesses solid communication skills and is a results-oriented individual who takes a pro-active approach to initiating and following through with a variety of recreation projects. This position entails a combination of administrative responsibilities and direct program delivery, and ensures positive relations with staff, external partnerships, and the public.

Term (include end date), full time, part time, 35 hours per week (or if different please include)

Probation Period

3 months from the date of hire.

Education Required

  • Graduation from High School Grade 12 or equivalent.

Experience Required

  • Minimum 6 months to 1 year of recreation or coordination experience.

Overtime Status

Non-exempt.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides leadership and oversight in the planning, development, implementation and delivery of all programs and activities for children aged six to eighteen within the After School/Youth Leadership Program, with sixty percent of the activities being physical.
  • Assists in program planning by assessing community needs through community engagement, surveys, feedback forms and parent participation engagement.
  • Ensures a safe, comfortable, and welcoming environment for children and youth providing age-appropriate activities with adaptations as needed.
  • Observe youth's interactions and promote the spirit of cooperation and kindness.
  • Identify behavioral problems and assist in determining the right course of action.
  • Responsible for the Recreation cellphone, ensuring clients are updated and that calls are being answered and responded to.
  • Encourages participants and parents to take the initiative to stay active in the after-school program so they can carry forward positive behaviors.
  • Consults with social workers, other professionals, and family when appropriate.
  • Promotes behavioral change and personal growth of children and youth who are having difficulties coping because of social, emotional, physical, or cognitive delays.
  • Maintains awareness of community resources and gaps, as well as the socio-economic and geographical make-up of the community.
  • Provides life skills training as per goals set out by the youth.
  • Supports youth to achieve their established goals using a strengths-based approach.
  • Ensures all necessary supplies are in place to successfully implement the planned activities.
  • Assists with special projects, activities, events, fundraising, and researching funding opportunities for programs and activities.
  • Participates in field trips designed to incorporate education.
  • Prepares and submits regular monthly activity reporting to Right-to-Play.
  • Records daily attendance log, statistics, and evaluated programs and activities at the end of each month.
  • Creates a safe and healthy environment where facilities are regularly secured, well-maintained, and clean.
  • Assists in communication and public awareness efforts for programs and events.
  • Report any problems which arise with participants, or other employees, to the Recreation Manager.
  • Be flexible and adaptable to new situations and provide support to the Recreation team as needed.
  • Supports the mission, vision, and values of Williams Lake First Nation.
  • Contributes to the WLFNs ongoing success by accomplishing other duties as required or assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office software at an intermediate/advanced level.
  • Experience with direct program and service delivery.
  • Experience in the areas of child and youth care, fitness, social and other leisure activities.

Skills & Abilities

  • Must be able to effectively coordinate with staff and keep program organized.
  • Must be able to work closely with staff and other employees and set an example for the staff as well as participants.
  • Must be able to handle any questions that arise with the public by answering them or by giving them the proper directions for the answer.
  • Must be in good physical condition.
  • Ability to counsel youth and act as a positive role model.
  • Experience creating participant-centered plans.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, very good judgment, and strong initiative.
  • Ability to multi-task, to identify priorities, be creative and maintain a detailed work plan.
  • Ability to recognize opportunities for improvement and efficiency.
  • Operates as part of a team and is flexible about the boundaries and functions of the job.
  • Maintains professionalism in all circumstances.
  • Recognizes and respects all cultural diversity and understands Indigenous culture.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Intermittent physical activity including walking, standing, sitting, and lifting.
  • May deal with youth who can, from time to time, be demanding and challenging. Must be able to remain patient and committed to the activities and may have to engage in conflict resolution or crisis management at times.
  • May have to manage several tasks at one time, while supervising the youth.
  • Noise levels may escalate during activities, events and outings.
  • May be required to work in various temperatures within the facility and outside.
  • To be aware of sensitivity, confidentiality and urgency of requests while balancing other work commitments.
  • Non-standard hours of work May be required to accommodate the community needs and that may consist of evenings and weekends.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Criminal Records Check
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid BC Drivers License (Class 4)
  • Must provide a vehicle in good operating condition and appropriate vehicle insurance to meet program requirements OR access to company vehicle is provided and requires a valid Drivers License.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid Emergency First Aid Certificate, WCB approved Level-1
