CHILD & FAMILY ENGAGEMENT ASSISTANT
Temporary, Full-Time Contract for Two Years (Comp #2025-01-02.2)
Location of Work: Head Office, Nipissing First Nation
The Child & Family Engagement Assistant position requires an excellent communicator who is highly organized and motivated who will support the Indigenous Cultural Safety pathway project. The project has been funded to develop culturally safe health care pathways for Indigenous families and to improve community relations between health and social service providers in North Bay and district. The position reports to the Project Lead. The Child & Family Engagement Assistant will assist in establishing equitable health care pathways for health, social, and community sectors who will work in partnership with community resources of the district of North Bay to coordinate and deliver the necessary health and social services to achieve improved Indigenous health outcomes.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Undergraduate Degree or diploma in Indigenous Studies, Child & Family Studies, Social Work, Education or Business.
- Demonstrated thorough understanding and knowledge of Indigenous culture, values, and history.
- Minimum two years experience in the helping field.
- Demonstrated ability to introduce and manage change, new concepts and best practices.
- Strong understanding of health systems, population health and health equity.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to follow work schedules.
- Demonstrated strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Experience with documentation and writing clear, concise reports.
- Experience working with First Nations organizations and/or an inter-professional primary care team.
- Fluency in an Indigenous language is an asset.
- Must have a Class G Ontario Drivers License, access to a vehicle with insurance.
- Must be able to travel.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of the Indigenous community of North Bay and partner First Nations: Nipissing, Dokis and Temagami First Nations.
- Ability to engage Indigenous community members, specifically families and children, and build establish trusting relationships.
- Understand and utilize trauma-informed approach.
- Ability to work with diverse Indigenous groups and elements of their cultures including Indigenous spirituality, physical activity, and healing methodology.
- Ability to assist in building optimal pathways that meet client and family needs and circumstances.
- Assist in establishing procedures for internal and external services to ensure follow-up supports are in place for clients and their families.
- Ability to communicate information effectively through a variety of means including meetings, emails, reports, letters, and presentations.
- Identify and relaying emerging issues / challenges to Project Lead.
- Highly organized, ability to effectively prioritize and multi-task.
- Ability to implement to approved work plan to ensure key implementation milestones are achieved.
- Communicate well and work effectively on a small project team.
- High level of sound and independent judgment, reasoning and discretion in accordance with NBIH policies and procedures.
- Computer skills (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
- Ability to work in a kind, supportive manner with Indigenous people and families.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Team player in engagement across a range of sectors in health and social services, and building strong strategic and productive relationships.
- Interview Indigenous families about their health care experiences.
- Participates in regular team meetings.
- Develop strong partnerships with community partners.
- Supports and travels to the partner First Nations when required.
- Assist in establishing culturally safe health care pathways for Indigenous community members.
- Participates on internal and external committees, sharing information, identifying goals and engaging in collaborative problem solving.
- Acts as a resource providing information and techniques to help connect Indigenous families to the most appropriate care.
- Contribute towards the creation of new policies, procedures and recommendations for health care pathways.
- Assist in establishing and implementing framework to connect Indigenous families to culturally safe and equitable health care.
- Monitors data, pathway progress and evaluate the effectiveness of services.
- Other duties as required.
As a condition of employment,
- Provide a current or recent Criminal Police Check with Vulnerable sector.
