Job Description:
An opportunity currently exists for a Power System Engineer in the Power System Studies team within the Projects department of AltaLink. This successful candidate will work with internal and external technical staff and deliver various types of system and facility studies to support the customer generation and load connection, transmission system planning/implementation and new business development. This individual will provide technical support and guidance at all critical project phases – from budgeting, planning, implementation, through to final acceptance. This position will appeal to individuals with power system study experience who are looking for an opportunity to further grow the breadth and depth of their power system knowledge and system and facility study skills in a dynamic utility environment. The position can be an intermediate or senior position pending on the qualification of the successful candidate. This position reports to the Manager, PSS & Principal Power Systems.
Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the Manager, Power System Studies team, this individual will be accountable for all or in part of the following:
- Deliver generation and load connection engineering studies and cost-effective solutions to our connecting customers.
- Optimize the connection alternative and develop mitigation measures to address performance issues. Studies will include contingency power-flow, short circuit, remedial action scheme, voltage stability, transient stability, harmonic and power quality and motor starting analyses;
- Deliver system planning assessment for transmission reinforcement and CRU projects.
- Help the project delivery team achieve a better understanding of the need of the proposed development. Suggest alternative solution and optimize project scope and timing;
- Deliver various facility studies for system and customer projects to optimize the facility design and equipment selection to meet the operation, reliability and safety requirement. There are various types of electromagnetic transient study including TOV/LOV/SOV, surge arrester sizing, TRV, SPTR, Sync-check, transformer energization, capacitor/cable switching, harmonic assessment and filter design etc;
- Support transmission modeling and provide current/future system capacity, power flow and short circuit information to other internal teams and external customers;
- Work with the AESO teams to identify system and operational issues on AltaLink's transmission system. Provide advice and input to the AESO's lead regional and bulk system planning studies; and
- Provide system and facility study support to new business development initiatives in the fast-changing power industry.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering with an emphasis on Power Engineering;
- Professional Engineer or qualifies for registration with the Association of Engineers & Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA);
- Minimum 4 years of power system engineering experience on high voltage transmission systems (138 kV, 240 kV, 500 kV) including minimum 3 years of industrial experience with utility companies;
- Proven ability/experience in the above noted responsibilities;
- Technical knowledge and understanding of transmission system modeling, operation and planning;
- Documented experience with PTI's (Power Technology Incorporated) PSSE program and other power system analysis tools such as PSCAD/EMTDC;
- Familiar with the AESO Reliability Criteria and the Alberta Interconnected Transmission System;
- Strong verbal and written (reporting, graphical) communication skills with ability to work in a team environment and positively influence others;
- Effective communication skills to interface with team members and customers to promote positive customer outcomes;
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage a wide variety of issues on multiple projects simultaneously;
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office: Word, Power Point, Excel etc and
- Proven track record of good attendance and performance.
