West Fraser offers a range of exciting career opportunities for individuals seeking challenging and rewarding careers. Our High-Level Division in Alberta is currently recruiting for a Log Yard Operator.

The Log Yard Operator is responsible for the efficient and safe handling of raw materials in the log yard. The heavy equipment operator will unload, sort, store, and transport logs to the OSB production line, while maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality, and environmental compliance.

What You'll Do:

  • Supervise unloading personnel, and report any discrepancies after releasing the driver
  • Inspect incoming log shipments for quality and compliance with company specifications
  • Conduct daily inspections of equipment, and complete pre-start checklists
  • Operate heavy equipment such as button-top log loader, front end loader, sennebogen, skid steer and portal cranes to transport logs within the yard
  • Run pre-checks on equipment after operations start, to ensure proper functioning and report any maintenance needs
  • Practice minor adjustments or repairs to equipment that's being operated, and assist Millwrights and Mechanics with repairs when requested
  • Unload trucks as requires, ensure all logs are received, sorted and processed in an efficient manner.
  • Unload logs into log decks, or the scale yard
  • Feed the mill through 4 infeed magazines
  • Maintain regular contact with strand prep, especially if there's an issue that impacts the logs in the magazines
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment, by ensuring the log yard is safe and in compliance with all safety regulations and standards
  • Ensure that the log ponds are properly filled with logs
  • Remain attentive, practice hand-eye coordination and multitasking skills such as operating equipment while observing signals from a colleague over a two-way radio
  • Communicate with team members, truck drivers, and mill personnel to coordinate operations effectively
  • Maintain accurate records of incoming logs, log inventory, and movements
  • Report any issues, delays or irregularities to the supervisor promptly

What You Will Need:

  • Experience as a Heavy Equipment Operator

Would be considered an asset:

  • High School Diploma
  • Experience in the forestry or manufacturing industry

Skills:

  • Hand-eye coordination
  • Communication – verbal and written
  • Ability to analyze a situation, evaluate options, and make a calculated decision in a timely manner
  • Ability to work independently, and as part of a team
  • Personal Commitment to Safety
  • Experience in the forestry or manufacturing industry is considered an asset
