About the Role
The Kitchen Assistant enhances the dignity and quality of life of our shelter clients through the primary responsibility of assisting the Cook with the preparation of the daily menu and food service items to the required standard and to maintain the required food and environmental hygiene within the dining room and commercial kitchen of Sojourn House. The afternoon weekend shifts are Friday-Sunday from 3:30 PM-8:30 PM.

Responsibilities and Duties
- Ensure that food preparation (daily vegetable peeling) meets all health and safety requirements such as but not limited to the washing and disinfecting of all food preparation work station between uses, proper cleaning of food items as per morning shift work schedule.
- Monitors and ensures clean plates, cutlery and mugs always available in dining room for shelter clients.
- Collect used plates, utensils and mugs from dining room, rinses lunch dishes, cutlery through dish washer, return dry dishes and cutlery to dining room
- Monitor and ensure coffee machine filter kept refilled
- Refill empty condiment containers
- Maintain ongoing sanitation to remove spills, clean all surfaces, wipe clean inside and outside fridge and freezer
- Dismantles cardboard boxes, remaining garbage for disposal and removal into appropriate recycling bins.
- Organizes dry storage and carries out the prescribed routine cleaning duties before end of each shift.
Experience/ Education
- Minimum of one year previous experience in a high volume commercial food services environment (preferably in a not for profit) is required.
- Previous experience in food preparation required.
- Current City of Toronto Public Health Food Handling Certificate required.
- Knowledge of WHMIS requirements and associated precautions in a commercial kitchen environment preferred.
- CPR/ First Aid Certificates acquired through a recognized course preferred.
Knowledge and Competencies
- Experience with the use of commercial kitchen equipment required including but not limited to stoves/grills, deep fryer, ovens, mixers, steam cooker and serving equipment, dish washer, etc.
Working Conditions
- Position require bending, must demonstrate physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs. for food deliveries or organizing storage area.
- Mandatory wearing of glove protection and hair/beard nets.
- Ability to stand for at least 4 hours.

- Every week, Friday - Sunday
- Afternoon shift: 3:30pm - 8:30pm
Other
Rate: $17.20/hour (2024 rate)
