Job Description:
An opportunity currently exists for a Principal Engineer, Power Systems. This role will appeal to strategic thinking individuals who enjoy technical leadership and solving significant and ambiguous problems leading to better business results.
The Principal Engineer must have well developed leadership capability along with a broad understanding of power system planning and operations. In addition, the Principal Engineer must have a strong understanding of AltaLink's business including current challenges, opportunities, threats, and direction. In carrying out their duties, the successful candidate will need to engage and collaborate with AltaLink's extensive engineering community, key business leaders and numerous external parties.
Responsibilities:
- Work closely with the Projects Engineering Manager and Project Management teams to deliver the required studies for customer connections and system projects. This individual will also engage the AESO regularly on system constraints and the impact to the many projects in development stages.
- Provide overall technical leadership within the Power Systems discipline. This will involve collaboratively setting a long-term direction, associated high level strategies, fundamental engineering philosophies and governing principles for analyzing and planning the power system and integration with operations. In addition, the Principal Engineer will be a key leader to inspire and facilitate innovation, development, and collaboration within AltaLink's engineering community.
- Provide expert power systems advice to Senior Leadership as they continue to evolve AltaLink's Business Strategies. This will require:
- The development and performance of special power system analysis.
- Identification of business opportunities and risks associated with planned or potential changes to the power system, regulatory decisions and policy shifts;
- Contribute to the development of AltaLink's vision of the future power system; and
- Translation of complex technical concepts into forms that can be understood by non-engineers.
- The Principal Engineer will be required to lead the resolution of significant and potentially ambiguous engineering and business challenges either individually or as part of a team.
- Develop a long-term vision and establish high level strategies for transmission planning and facility optimization to maximize the transmission asset value to our customers and to the public and mitigate AltaLink's operational and business risks. The vision and strategies shall be aligned across disciplines and address various dimensions including technology, skill development, tools and work methods.
- Facilitate the awareness of new technical challenges and opportunities in the evolving power industry associated with renewable generation and emerging technologies. Translate them into business terms and directions.
- As an individual, leader or as member of a technical team, solve significant and often ambiguous engineering and business challenges.
- Interface with industry, AESO, other utilities and stakeholders, as a leader to influence and shape direction on behalf of AltaLink and our customers.
- Act as a catalyst for innovation. Encourage new ideas and challenging the status quo.
- Build cross-organizational and cross discipline understanding of issues and challenges.
- Facilitate the development of staff related to the power system discipline through defining technical training requirements, mentorship, and working directly with engineering team leaders.
- Guide the development of technical standards to help ensure AltaLink's transmission facilities meet acceptable standards for operability, functionality, maintainability, reliability, durability, and safety.
- Contribute to the continued building of AltaLink's Reputation as a Leader/Innovator in the Power Industry that can be leveraged for AltaLink' advantage.
- Perform the duties of a Responsible Member as outlined in AltaLink's PPMP.
- Mentor and support the studies engineering team in providing the professional work product required for projects.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering.
- Registered as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).
- Minimum 10 years of working experience in transmission planning and system/facility studies.
- Experience in power system operations will be considered an asset.
- Broad knowledge of other disciplines, Alberta's Electricity Industry and AltaLink's business.
- Proven ability/experience in the above noted responsibilities.
- Excellent analytical, risk assessment and problem-solving skills.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills to interface with team members and customers to promote positive customer outcomes.
- Track record of producing innovative, productivity enhancing and forward-thinking solutions with measurable impacts.
- Established and growing strong internal and external relationships
- Independent time management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage a wide variety of issues simultaneously.
- Knowledge of key industry standards such as CSA, ANSI, IEC and IEEE standards.
