CULTURAL DRUMMER (FULL-TIME)

REPORTING TO: PRINCIPAL

Migisi Sahgaigan School is seeking a passionate Cultural Drum Instructor to join our education team. Reporting to the Principal, the successful candidate will guide students in understanding and performing the drum in alignment with Ojibwe culture. This role is pivotal in fostering an appreciation for Anishinaabe traditions and connecting students to their heritage through music.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Create an inclusive and engaging classroom environment to encourage student participation and learning.
• Develop and deliver drum-focused lessons, teaching the cultural significance of the drum within Ojibwe traditions.
• Provide hands-on guidance to help students develop and enhance their drumming skills.
• Collaborate with other teachers to incorporate drumming into the wider curriculum.
• Maintain and repair drumming and cultural equipment as needed.
• Actively participate in the school community beyond classroom instruction.
• Cultivates a positive work environment reflecting Eagle Lake Band values and culture.
• Performs additional duties as necessary and assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Knowledge of Migisi Sahgaigan community and Anishinaabe traditions.
• Demonstrated experience and respect for Anishinaabe culture, including cultural ceremonies.
• Grade 12 diploma or equivalent, with experience in Ojibwe drumming.
• Strong organizational and communication skills.
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office 365.
• Fluent Ojibwe speaker is an asset.

REQUIREMENTS:

• Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Search.
• First Aid and CPR certification.
• Valid drivers license and reliable transportation.
