?akisqnuk First Nation (AFN) is seeking a Regulatory Engagement Coordinator to assess and respond to referrals with potential impacts on the Nations Title, Rights, and environmental, cultural, or socio-economic interests. Reporting to the Lands and Environment Manager, this role requires expertise in referral management, research, stakeholder engagement, and administrative coordination to support the Lands and Resources department in achieving its goals.

Job Type: This role is full-time working 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday.

The primary responsibilities include:

Referral Management:

  • Receive, triage, research, and respond to resource development referrals and inquiries from government, industry, and other proponents.
  • Use referral software systems to track correspondence, manage data, and maintain organized records.
  • Review project proposals, assess environmental and socio-economic impacts, and prepare timely responses with recommendations.

Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Coordinate with Elders, Lands Committee, community knowledge holders, and technical experts to gather information.
  • Liaise with provincial and federal authorities, industry proponents, and neighboring First Nations on referrals, permits, and land use concerns.
  • Participate in community meetings, inter-governmental discussions, and working groups to advocate for AFN policies and interests.

Administrative Support:

  • Manage electronic and physical records, ensuring accurate data entry in the Referrals Tracking System.
  • Support Lands department tasks such as meeting coordination, budget tracking, and project implementation.
  • Draft reports, briefing notes, and technical memos for internal and external stakeholders.

Policy and Process Development:

  • Assist in updating referral policies and procedures to improve response strategies.
  • Develop systems for document management, community knowledge keeping, and electronic lands inventory.

Other duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Completion of a two-year post-secondary program such as natural resource management, political science, forestry, anthropology, first nations studies, environment science, governance or geography, or similar is required.
  • Minimum of two years of progressively more responsible regulatory engagement experience.
  • Strong knowledge of referral and consultation processes, particularly in a First Nation context.
  • Experience with environmental assessments, project proposals, and socio-economic impact analysis.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills to represent AFN policies to diverse stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in data management systems and administrative tools.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal teams, external stakeholders, and technical experts.
  • Research and analytical skills to identify issues and recommend solutions.

  • Competitive base salary (starting salary $60,000 to $67,000 per annum)
