The Environmental Service Manager reports to the Executive Director and performs general, routine maintenance and servicing operations throughout the home, in accordance with applicable codes and regulations and as directed by the Executive Director.

Responsibilities:

  • As directed and in accordance with applicable codes and regulations, performs a variety of routine maintenance, servicing and repair operations to maintain home, equipment, furnishings, fixtures, and grounds in proper condition. Responsible for effectively scheduling & supervising maintenance and repair work.
  • Assigns maintenance crew to specific tasks, supervises to ensure standards and safety rules are observed and maintained.
  • Observes and monitors all areas of the home for ongoing maintenance requirements and carries out preventative maintenance programs as directed.
  • Supervises the Handy Person and Painters, prepares time and work schedules, staff training and performance appraisals.
  • Performs typical work such as replacing fuses and light bulbs, repairing call bells, clearing drains, repairing beds, chairs, tables, etc., painting and redecorating tasks, replacing tiles, and removing garbage.
  • Following approval, refers problems requiring specialized work such as electrical or plumbing, to outside contractors and monitors work performed.
  • Provides general assistance to skilled trade persons such as mechanics, electricians, carpenters, plumbers, painters, etc., as required.
  • Conducts regular maintenance rounds to ensure all life safety and building and support systems are functioning properly.
  • Adheres to established policies and procedures regarding quality assurance, safety, environment and infection control.
  • Participates in fire prevention and fire drill procedures, including staff training (if certified), in proper procedures and use of firefighting equipment. Liaises with local municipal Fire Departments.
  • Liaises with outside service contractors and inspectors to assure equipment and environment conform to applicable codes and regulations.
  • Participates in budget preparation and control. Orders and/or purchases supplies/equipment in accordance with established purchasing policies and budgetary constraints.
  • Participates in Committee Meetings such as infection control, quality assurance and safety, as required. Establishes and maintains communications with other departments and works cooperatively in carrying out duties to assure the needs of residents are being met.
  • Maintains required records, reports, statistics, etc., in accordance with policies, procedures and legislative requirements.
  • Ensures the privacy of residents during performance of duties.
  • Maintains work area in a clean, orderly and safe manner and assures proper care in use of tools, equipment and supplies.
  • Notifies the Administrator/Executive Director of significant building/equipment malfunctions/problems.
  • Any other related duties as assigned.

HOUSEKEEPING AND LAUNDRY:

  • Plans, organizes, directs and supervises the activities of the housekeeping and laundry departments to ensure high standards of cleanliness and sanitation and to provide quality linen and personal laundry service in compliance with legislative requirements. Establishes and monitors workflow, evaluates performance and production and makes changes, as necessary, to improve quality of service. Coordinates activities with those of other departments. Informs administration of activities, needs and problems.
  • Participates in the hiring process, trains/orients and provides work direction, instruction and guidance to department staff. Monitors and evaluates performance.
  • Attempts to resolve problems with staff and refers to superior, if necessary.
  • Encourages staff participation at in-service education programs.
  • Maintains established department plans, policies and procedures regarding such things as quality management, infection control and safety and ensures compliance by employees.
  • Schedules and supervises housekeeping functions and activities; establishes housekeeping routines and workflow patterns in cooperation with resident care personnel so as not to interfere with resident care and activities. Promotes efficiency in work performance and cost effective use of time, equipment and supplies.
  • Tours home regularly to observe staff and ensure compliance with instructions and quality of work.
  • Audits finished linens and personal clothing to assure quality service. Ensures proper distribution or storage of finished linens and arranges delivery or delivers personal clothing.
  • Instructs housekeeping and laundry staff in use of equipment, cleaning and washing agents, and in cleaning techniques/methods.
  • Participates in budget preparation and control.
  • Maintains inventories and assures safe storage of all supplies. Assures proper maintenance and functioning of equipment and arranges for repairs as necessary.
  • Maintains all required records, reports, statistics, etc., in accordance with policies, procedures & legislative requirements.
  • Participates in committee meetings such as infection control, quality management and safety, as required. Establishes and maintains communications with the department and with other departments to ensure the needs of residents are being met.
  • Performs duties as needed in the department to facilitate the housekeeping and laundry operations.

Qualifications:

The qualifications needed to join our family are as follows:

  • Experience in a managerial or supervisory capacity, or in the reasonable opinion of the Home, appropriate skills, knowledge and experience in a health care or relevant setting to perform the duties required of the position.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based practices, and, if there are none, prevailing practices related to housekeeping, laundry and maintenance as applicable.
  • Experience in general maintenance and repairs preferred.
  • Preferred knowledge of commercial cleaning and laundry equipment, chemicals/agents, laundry products and methods/processes. Some previous experience in performing housekeeping and laundry functions. Supervisory skills required to manage staff and resources. Knowledge of safety rules and procedures and legislation pertaining to housekeeping and laundry operations.
  • Ability to read, write and understand oral and written instructions.
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems, plumbing and carpentry; ability to read and interpret manuals related to equipment and systems.
  • Ability to evaluate and determine when the services of skilled trade's people are necessary. Skilled in the use of a wide range of tools.
  • Ability to train, direct and supervise others.
  • Knowledge - possibly Journeyman in one (1) on the mechanical /electrical trades.
  • To show evidence of being focused on people's feelings when interacting and knowing how to turn a task into positive social interaction.
  • To undertake and meet all legal requirements within a context of promoting individuals' rights and measuring/reducing elements of risk.
  • Must provide a complete and current (within six months) Vulnerable Sector Check (including a Criminal Background Check) or be willing to obtain one
  • As a condition of employment, candidates are required to submit documented results of TB testing (within the last six months or within 14 days upon hire) or a chest X-ray (within the last year), as per Public Health requirements
  • Two supervisory references required
  • Provide proof of all required vaccines. The Employer strongly recommends to “stay up to date” with the recommended vaccines. Vaccination requirements are subject to changes as determined by the Employer
  • Italian speaking is an asset
