What Are We Looking For?

  • Job Type: Full Time (40 hours/week)

  • Reports to Manager: Integrated Support Services

Position Overview

Reporting directly to the Senior Manager of Integrated Support Services, the Child and Youth Development Worker will work collaboratively with the Child and Youth Development (CYD) team to provide scheduled childminding for shelter families as well as emergent respite childminding for shelter families. The CYD Worker will also develop and facilitate daily activities/programming for children, youth, and their families. This role requires knowledge and understanding of child and youth development to provide developmentally appropriate play experiences within a trauma-informed, Indigenous, and cultural lens. This position is 40 hours per week and requires flexible work hours to support program needs a minimum of one weekday evening and alternating Saturdays.

What Youll Do

  • Provide scheduled childminding for families in the shelter, including emergent childminding when requested
  • Assist in developing and facilitating appropriate activities for children, youth, and parents/guardians
  • Develop working relationships with families and model positive relationships and boundaries with parent-child interactions
  • Engage with families and observe children and youth for signs of learning challenges or emotional needs and provide updates to the CYD Case Manager
  • Put together welcome boxes and activities for families when they arrive at the shelter
  • Work collaboratively with the CYD team members, and volunteers when onsite
  • Clearly and effectively communicate in a manner that children and youth understand
  • Respond promptly to emails and use HOMES 2.0, the organizations client information management system.
  • Maintain confidentiality of family information in accordance with IFTC policies.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation and case notes of support provided to families using established systems HOMES, TEAMS, Program Drive folders
  • Ensure accuracy, confidentiality, and safekeeping of agency records according to the Freedom of Information & Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP)
  • Ensure all appropriate referral documentation is complete and on time.

This position description reflects the general duties of the role but is not intended to include all duties that may be inherent in the position. Family Support Workers may be asked to perform other duties as required or assigned.

What You Bring to Our Mission

  • Early Childhood Education Diploma (Level 1,2 & 3) is preferred; relevant education in a human services field and experience working with children, youth, and families may also be considered
  • Minimum two years of experience working with children and families with a strong focus on parenting strategies
  • Working knowledge of child development theories and practices
  • Current First Aid with Level C CPR required.
  • Ability to successfully work with children and their parents in a sensitive, effective, and professional manner
  • Strong working knowledge of relevant legislation, policies, and procedures to ensure that children are supervised
  • Ability to create safe and appropriate activities for children and youth
  • Computer literacy, including effective working skills in MS Word, Excel and e-mail are required
  • Good organizational, time management, and prioritization skills
  • Strong work ethics, sound judgment, and reasoning skills, along with a commitment to discretion and family and staff confidentiality
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills that allow one to work effectively in a diverse working environment
  • Physically able to perform all assigned tasks
  • Knowledge of social issues surrounding poverty and homelessness
