Role Synopsis:The Senior Tax Accountant - Corporate Canadian Tax will play a pivotal role in the organization's corporate tax compliance and strategic tax management functions. This position necessitates a comprehensive understanding of Canadian tax legislation, coupled with robust analytical capabilities, and the capacity to collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams.Key Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the preparation and filing of corporate tax returns and financial statements, ensuring compliance with prevailing Canadian tax laws and regulations such as the Income Tax Act (ITA).
- Formulate and execute tax planning strategies designed to maximize the organization's tax efficiencies, minimize liabilities, and ensure optimal tax alignment with business objectives.
- Oversee payroll-related tax compliance, ensuring accurate reporting and remittance of HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) while adhering to provincial and federal regulatory frameworks.
- Manage all facets of CRA (Canada Revenue Agency) audits, including the preparation of comprehensive documentation, the formulation of responses to inquiries, and coordination with legal counsel when necessary.
- Conduct intricate analyses and applications of advanced corporate tax concepts, including but not limited to:
- Capital Dividend Account (CDA) mechanics and implications on tax-free distributions,
- General Rate Income Pool (GRIP) calculations for eligible dividends,
- Differentiation between eligible and non-eligible dividends, and their tax treatment,
- Detailed understanding of Enhanced Refundable Dividend Tax On Hand (ERDTOH) and Non-Eligible Refundable Dividend Tax On Hand (NERDTOH) rules.
- Perform thorough reviews of financial statements highlighting potential tax implications to provide strategic insights and recommendations to senior management.
- Engage in rigorous research on complex tax matters, synthesizing findings into actionable strategies and articulate conclusions.
- Collaborate closely with external tax advisors and auditors to address multifaceted tax matters and ensure that all tax positions are well-supported with documentation.
- Provide mentorship and guidance to junior tax staff, promoting knowledge sharing and enhancing the team's competencies in corporate tax matters.
- Assist in the development of financial forecasts and budgets with an emphasis on tax-related components that influence business strategy.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline; a Master's degree and/or CPA designation is strongly preferred.
- A minimum of 6 years of specialized experience in corporate taxation within a public accounting framework or a corporate tax department, with a thorough understanding of business operation contexts.
- Strong proficiency in Canadian corporate tax regulations and compliance matters, notably in the areas of payroll taxation, HST obligations, and executive oversight of CRA audit processes.
- Demonstrated capability in the preparation of corporate tax returns and financial statements under Canadian GAAP and IFRS as applicable.
- In-depth knowledge of corporate tax principles, including CDA, GRIP, eligible/non-eligible dividends, ERDTOH, and NERDTOH, ensuring a firm grasp of their application in practical scenarios.
- Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, with a capacity to interpret complex tax issues and present feasible resolutions.
- Proficient in utilizing tax compliance software and Microsoft Office Suite (particularly Excel for data analysis).
- Advanced communication skills, both written and verbal, enabling effective interaction with external agencies and internal stakeholders across various levels.
