Position Description:
- To safeguard life and prevent accidents at the County swimming pool and to teach swimming programs and promote good public relations with users of the facility
- Responsible for safety supervision, class management and risk management during instructional classes
- Assists with staff scheduling duties for students
- Works according to Occupational Health and Safety Act, Lifesaving Society Standards, and corporate policies and procedures
- Provide instruction to individuals and groups in organized instructional classes
- Prepare lessons plans, organize equipment, teach and evaluate instructional classes in accordance with the standards established by the Lifesaving Society and Norfolk County. Classes may also include advanced leadership courses, aquafitness and mobility programs.
- Complete all documentation related to class instruction such as but not limited to attendance, completing report cards, and inputting participant results into recreation software system
- Perform lifeguard duties during recreational swims, rental groups, and other aquatics programs. Ensure compliance with Regulation 565 and Norfolk County policies and procedures including performing rescues and first aid when required.
- Ability to use critical thinking and react in an emergency situation which may involve first aid or a building emergency. Ability to direct staff and patrons .in an emergency and ensure documentation is complete.
- Attend aquatic meetings and in-house training sessions that are organized by the Supervisor, Aquatics. Assist in the planning, implementation, and documentation of in-service training sessions.
- Participate in team building and provide support for all staff. Act as a role model for staff.
- Complete any necessary reports and documentation associated with pool operation to include shift reports in the pool log book, incident reports, pool fouling reports, instructor lesson evaluations, and lifeguard evaluations
- To perform administrative functions as directed
- Provide professional and courteous customer service at all times to include: greeting customers, answering phone calls, assisting customers with inquiries and online registration/booking system, accepting payments- including handling cash transactions during the shift (i.e., taking registrations, issuing passes and pass cards, issuing receipts, and balancing cash at the end of shift)
- To take inventory of concession and cleaning supplies and place orders as necessary
- To supervise and provide direction to student staff and ensure staff are following legislative requirements
- To plan and organize special events and assist with special pool programs and County water safety initiatives
- Help to maintain the pool facility by performing regulated water tests, equipment checks, cleaning and sanitization duties in accordance to Ministry of Health and Norfolk County policies. Report all problems to Supervisor, Aquatics and/or full-time Senior Instructor Guard.
- To assist and provide support to the Supervisor, Aquatics and full-time Senior Instructor Guard in the operation of the Delhi Kinsmen Pool
- Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor, Aquatics
Requirements
Qualifications: *all qualifications must be current
- 2 years' experience as a Supervising Instructor Guard
- Lifesaving Swim Instructor
- Lifesaving Society Instructor
- National Lifeguard certification
- Standard First Aid with C.P.R. Level C., A.E.D.
- High Five – Principles of Healthy Child Development (an asset)
- Lifesaving Society Aquatic Supervisor Training (an asset)
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Working knowledge of Recreation Management Software, preferably XPLOR/Perfect Mind considered an asset
- High degree of alertness and vigilance with attention to detail as it relates to the pool environment
- Excellent time management, problem solving, interpersonal and communication skills
- Excellent customer service skills and the ability to deal with challenging customer service situations
- Self-motivated and self-directed
- Strong organizational and instructional skills
- Proven leadership ability, excellent staff relations skills and ability to work as a team member
- Ability to plan and manage special events
- Must be aware of safe work practices as they relate to job responsibilities and work environment and have a basic understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
Note:
Recreation and Aquatics is a 7-day operation. Must be available and willing to work early mornings, days, weekends, evenings and holidays.
Employment is conditional upon: attendance at all training sessions, submission of required documentation/certification, adherence to the minimum age requirements and ability to meet the employment term.
At time of application must be enrolled in a post-secondary education institution or institution of higher learning.
Applicants must submit a criminal record check (dated within the last 3 months) from their local police service for approval prior to commencing employment.
