We're crewing up on Julin, a new animated feature film from five time Oscar nominated studio Cartoon Saloon (WolfWalkers, The Breadwinner, Song of the Sea, The Secret of Kells and Late Afternoon). The 2D film marks the feature directorial debut of Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Louise Bagnall (Late Afternoon), with the title based on the graphic novel "Julin is a Mermaid" by Jessica Love.


Julin is the second collaboration between Guru Studio, Cartoon Saloon and Aircraft Pictures, following the 2018 Oscar-nominated film, The Breadwinner.

Were looking for a visionary and talented Digital Ink and Paint Supervisor to help us bring this inspired story to life!

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and supervise the DIP team, ensuring adherence to approved model sheets for line coloring and fill painting animation sequences in ToonBoom Harmony
  • Assigning work to Scene Setup & DIP Artists
    Supervise and guide Scene Setup & DIP Artists in breaking down shots into individual components
  • Research appropriate references to ensure continuity across similar shots, proactively communicating these findings to the team
  • Identify and correct paint artifacts, sharpness, and color issues with a keen eye for detail
  • Effectively manage complex shots involving heavy motion blur, multiple layers, and intricate composition details
  • Utilize advanced techniques for challenging wire removals and creating clean plates
  • Demonstrates a basic ability to do paint on comp work to a high level of quality
  • Troubleshoot effectively and support team members with options and solutions for production issues
  • Takes ownership of shots, proactively offering solutions and alternatives for production challenges
  • Provide mentorship to Junior Artists and collaborate with the production team to foster an inclusive work environment

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, Drawing, Animation, or equivalent artistic background
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in a similar lead/supervisor role on a fast-paced production environment
  • Experienced with ToonBoom Harmony
  • Python and/or C++ experience a plus
  • Solid understanding of how DIP work integrates into the production pipeline, with awareness of its impact on adjacent departments
  • Demonstrated adaptability to learn new tools, meticulous attention to detail, and strong problem-solving skills
  • Adaptability and willingness to work under tight deadlines and to work efficiently within a production environment
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to communicate clearly and effectively
  • Excellent leadership skills, ability to delegate work efficiently
  • Strong team-player with the ability to work collaboratively with a variety of departments and different personalities
  • Expert Knowledge of CG, 2D and compositing pipelines and workflows
  • Knowledge of Moho and TVPaint
