We're crewing up on Julin, a new animated feature film from five time Oscar nominated studio Cartoon Saloon (WolfWalkers, The Breadwinner, Song of the Sea, The Secret of Kells and Late Afternoon). The 2D film marks the feature directorial debut of Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Louise Bagnall (Late Afternoon), with the title based on the graphic novel "Julin is a Mermaid" by Jessica Love.


Julin is the second collaboration between Guru Studio, Cartoon Saloon and Aircraft Pictures, following the 2018 Oscar-nominated film, The Breadwinner.

Responsibilities:

  • Create clean, efficient, and logically structured compositions that are easy to adjust.
  • Composite digital FX, highlights, and tones within the existing compositing pipeline.
  • Collaborate with FX artists and supervisors to maintain high-quality, consistent results.
  • Set up shots and manage renders technically.
  • Integrate and render ToonBoom Harmony animation and FX, Photoshop environments, and Moho elements to produce final shots.
  • Develop macros and gizmos to streamline repetitive tasks and improve workflows.
  • Interpret the Art Directors creative vision and ensure it aligns with the shows visual style.
  • Add texture layers to animation.
  • Use color and vignette techniques to highlight subjects or actions in each shot.
  • Maintain quality, style, and production schedules across all shots.
  • Communicate regularly with leads and supervisors, and meet production deadlines.
  • Contribute to workflow improvements, identify potential issues, and assist with solutions.
  • Layer scenes, add camera moves, masks, filters, and other effects as required.
  • Archive relevant compositing material for potential future reuse.
  • Perform additional duties in early compositing and scene preparation as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Strong artistic skills are an asset; proficiency with NUKE is required.
  • Knowledge of camera lenses and focus techniques to create depth and scale.
  • Understanding of Nukes 3D environment, projections, and ReLight techniques.
  • Experience compositing with multiple 2D render layers and elements.
  • Familiarity with node-based compositing systems like Fusion or Nuke.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a creative approach to technical challenges.
  • Excellent communication skills; collaborates effectively and shares information with teammates.
  • Knowledge of 2D animation production pipelines is a plus
  • Familiarity with ShotGrid for managing tasks and deadlines
