Position Description:
As a Coordinator of an energetic day camp team, you will mentor and motivate a group of staff in one of Norfolk County's summer camps with responsibilities including program planning, program delivery, staff feedback and evaluation and administration; supervises a group of 1 to 10 campers (children or youth).
Through effective leadership and programming, enables children and youth to develop skills, make friends, socialize and build self-esteem. Accountable for the wellbeing of a group of staff and campers under the guidance of the Regional Coordinator, ensuring camp activities are safe, inclusive and high quality following the High Five model.
- Develops program plans during Coordinator Training and submit to the Regional Coordinator prior to commencement of summer day camp program of July 7, 2025. Prepare and submit wrap up report by August 8, 2025.
- Prepares and organizes program equipment, supplies and first aid supplies prior to and during camp, reporting any inventory shortages/damages to the Regional Coordinator
- Responsible for daily opening and closing procedures at camp locations
- Organizes and assists with set up and clean-up of camp events, activities and programs
- Facilitates day camp activities, such as sports, games, swimming, crafts and special events. Helps to ensure programming is inclusive and adapted to camper needs with regard to safety, hygiene, weather, breaks etc. Adapt program plans as required.
- Closely monitors camper conduct and provides leadership to staff regarding strategies for supervision
- Keeps attendance records and promptly reports absences to the Regional Coordinator. This includes knowing the location of each camper at all times during camp operation
- Completes Incident reports as required and remits to the Regional Coordinator in a timely manner.
- Prioritizes and ensures child well-being, safety and protection throughout the camp and of each camper within her/her assigned group. Evaluates situations of potential risks to the safety, protection and well-being of campers and staff, proactively taking mitigating actions to address such risks. Constantly evaluates the weather to adapt program plans for camper and staff safety and comfort.
- Actively participates in program delivery, including taking the lead in facilitating activities, site set up/tear down and in-water activities.
- Serves as a liaison with parents of campers, reinforcing Norfolk County's customer service, diversity and inclusion (children/youth with a disability, ethno-cultural, English as a second language, socio-economic) policies
- Maintains and models a professional attitude
- Assist with the facilitation of special events hosted by Norfolk County Demonstrates the confidence and ability to make decisions independently of peers and in the best interests of the campers. Resolves problems and conflicts effectively as they arise
- Ensures all participants and parents are aware of upcoming events and schedule changes
- Follows Norfolk County policies and procedures and Summer Day Camp Procedures in program activities
- Maintains positive, constructive relationships with camp staff and volunteers with the goal of meeting camper needs
- Coaches and mentors day camp staff, volunteers and campers
- Maintains effective and professional communication by providing regular updates and feedback to the Regional Coordinator
- Reports to Regional Coordinator
- Other duties as required
Requirements
Qualifications:
- College/University student with studies in Recreation, Outdoor Leadership Education, Child and Youth Worker, Social Services area or equivalent- minimum 1 year of post-secondary education is required
- Standard First Aid with CPR Level C (if hired, must be obtained by July 7, 2025)
- HIGH FIVE – Principles of Healthy Child Development (if hired, must be obtained by July 7, 2025)
- Experience working with children; knowledge of child development, crafts, sports, music and/or games
- Experience in a leadership capacity is required i.e. student council member, leadership role on youth council
- Supervisory experience in a day camp setting
- Ability to prepare and adapt program plans and activities on a daily basis
- Must have experience and skills in supporting staff including coaching, training development, conflict resolution and mentoring
- Excellent customer service and time management skills
- Strong interpersonal, communication and problem solving skills
- Knowledge of programs offered by Norfolk County
- Ability to work in a team environment, accept and follow verbal and written instructions, complete duties to an acceptable level of quantity and quality with minimal supervision and follow all of Norfolk County Health and Safety Policies and Procedures
- Ability to deal with the public courteously and effectively
- Must be motivated, hardworking individual able to work outside in all weather (hot, dusty, cold and wet)
- Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
Note:
Must be willing to work weekends, evenings and holidays.
Employment is conditional upon: attendance at all training sessions, submission of required documentation/certification, adherence to the minimum age requirements and ability to meet the employment term.
At time of application must be enrolled in a post-secondary education institution or institution of higher learning.
Applicants must submit a criminal record check (dated within the last 3 months) from their local police service for approval prior to commencing employment.

Duration:
The duration of this contract will be approximately 3 months. Applicants are expected to fulfill the entire contract period commencing May 24, 2025 until August 29, 2025. Coordinator will begin expanded schedules, up to 40 hours per week starting July 7, 2025.
