We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our Mechanical Division in Edmonton, AB.

This position plays a key role in designing mechanical systems in residential, commercial and industrial buildings to deliver energy-saving, safe, and cost-effective solutions to clients. The Senior Mechanical Engineer will manage project activities from conception to completion and will be responsible to sign and seal government documents and drawings. Other duties will fall under the direction of the Mechanical Engineering Manager on a project-by-project basis.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the project life cycle from preliminary design through to project turnover
  • Participate in design meetings with clients to provide timely input on anticipated mechanical schemes
  • Coordinate mechanical designs and documents with other disciplines
  • Prepare mechanical engineering budgets and schedules as assigned
  • Prepare fee proposals for mechanical-related aspects of a project as assigned
  • Ensure a schedule of tasks is completed for each project within the budgeted hours
  • Develop and maintain ongoing system engineering concepts (QA/QC), related to mechanical engineering, for KD Mechanical
  • Lead the development of quality products and service standards for KD Mechanical and ensure compliance
  • Mentor and coach junior-level KD Mechanical employees and review their work prior to submitting to Project Manager
  • Perform load calculations using company provided software
  • Coordination of mechanical systems and design with other disciplines
  • Identify and address the need for additional services and fees to project managers in a timely fashion
  • Develop, maintain, and manage relationships with clients, industry leaders, architects, engineers, contractors, etc.
  • As required, perform mechanical engineering design and construction services on projects encompassing, but not limited to, the following:
    • Prepare calculation and perform design requirements for Building Permit/Tender/Construction contract documents
    • During the construction phase of the project prepare site instructions, and proposed change notices, review shop drawings, RFI responses, conduct site reviews, and attend site meetings as required, or delegate to a project manager
  • Perform peer review of contract documents before issuance for Building Permit/Tender/Construction
  • Ensure a schedule of tasks is completed for each project within the budgeted hours
  • Adhere to the development of quality products and service standards for KD Mechanical and ensure compliance
  • Review shop drawings, and codes and obtain preliminary approvals where appropriate
  • Keep apprised of industry and technical trends, codes, and standards
  • Responsible for professionally sealing documents
  • Strive to accomplish company goals of high-quality workmanship and project timelines through the continual improvement of workflows and design standards

Mandatory skills and requirements

  • Eng licenses in Alberta, Canada
  • HVAC and plumbing design experience
  • Familiar with Building Services
  • Must be able to provide drawing review
  • Must be able to produce mark-ups
  • Must be able to conduct field reviews

Other Qualifications

  • 10 years plus of cognate experience
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering
  • Registered P.Eng. in Alberta
  • Strong knowledge of load calculations using programs such as HAP or Trace700 is required
  • Strong knowledge of current codes and standards such as the local plumbing and building codes
  • Solid understanding of building science, heat transfer, thermodynamics and airflow fundamentals
  • Solid knowledge of NFPA, NECB and ASHRAE standards, relevant building codes and plumbing codes
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, along with excellent interpersonal skills
  • Experience with energy modelling is an asset
