Mangrove Lithium, a Vancouver based company, has developed a breakthrough platform for the most cost-effective production of battery grade lithium hydroxide and carbonate from diverse input streams and assets. Mangrove's modular solution can be scaled to any capacity and co-located with upstream lithium producers or cathode and cell manufacturers. The platform technology is being commercialized for the conversion of waste brines to chemicals and desalinated water. The company recently attracted funding through Breakthrough Energy, BMW i Ventures, and BDC Capital and is working towards the deployment of
a first-of-a-kind commercial plant.

Position

Mangrove is seeking an exceptional individual to play a key role in developing and commercializing its technology. The Principal Membrane and Failure analysis Scientist/Engineer will work with both the Research and Engineering teams on investigating and improving key components of Mangrove's technology. The Principal Membrane and Failure analysis Scientist/Engineer will work in the technology development team and this role will be involved in the design, development, testing, characterization, and scaling of advanced electrolyzer components. The right candidate for this position will have a strong understanding of ion exchange membranes evaluations and development, and electrochemical principles, devices, and processes. The individual will have a diverse and well-rounded technical and entrepreneurial skill-set. Required Education, Skills and Experience

  • MSc or PhD in chemical engineering, chemistry, materials science/engineering, mechanical engineering, or related fields.
  • Minimum 10 years industrial experience in membranes evaluations/development and electrochemical engineering. Proven ability to plan and execute complex research and development projects.
  • Hands on experience in the ion exchange membranes testing, developing, analysis, and electrochemical characterizations.
  • Strong data analysis skills are essential. The candidate is expected to be proficient in developing a data-driven research program, using modern software tools to interpret and analyze large datasets in their experimental work. Demonstrable experience with python and numpy or pandas is an asset.
  • Apply statistical design of experiments to efficiently use resources and improve data quality. Analyse results using rigorous statistical analysis.
  • Experience in the materials characterization techniques (e.g., XRD, SEM, EDX, AFM, FTIR, …).
  • Experienced on identifying membranes and electrodes failure mechanisms in electrochemical processes.
  • Communicate a schedule of experiment plans and characterization work for process robustness and longevity at lab/bench scales.
  • Experience dealing with developing or conducting tests using accelerated degradation protocols.
  • Experience in cyclic voltammetry, impedance spectroscopy, potentiostatic and galvanostatic testing and durability testing of electrochemical components.
  • Experience in electrolyzer/fuel cell testing and optimization toward performance and durability improvement
  • Experience working in R&D and product development environments.
  • Excellent critical thinking, analysis, problem-solving and communications skills.
  • Self-motivated, proactive, flexible and passionate about learning.
  • Willing to be hands-on.
  • Ability to interact with a wide range of scientists and engineers.

Desirable Characteristics

  • Experience on the development of mathematical models to predict and understand the performance of materials will be an asset.
