Position Summary:

Position: HSE Lead

Type: Full-time

Location: Suncor

Schedule: 4 on / 3 off (Mon-Thurs) 10-hour days

*Preference will be given to local candidates

Role Summary:

The HSE/Safety Lead works closely with multi-disciplined teams to provide HSE related services and direction to the team to continuously improve Bouchier's HSE performance. The HSE/Safety Lead has direct oversight of front-line safety personnel on various contracted worksites within the Bouchier Group to include coaching, mentoring, providing direction and performance management. He/she assists in department business planning and management to ensure best practices, policies and standards are integrated into day-to-day activities of our entire workforce.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Championing compliance with Health and Safety standards and legal regulations
  • Support in the development, implementation and analysis of health and safety reporting systems
  • Provide technical assistance during incident investigations to identify root causes of incidents; monitor follow-up actions to ensure they are completed in a timely manner and share outcomes with the organization
  • Provide strategic safety expertise within safety and operations
  • Benchmark HSE statistics and assist with WCB Case Management
  • Provide subject matter expertise and coaching to operations and other safety team members
  • Respond to diverse/complex queries on a broad range of safety-related topics
  • Work with senior leaders, operations managers and the safety team to instill engagement ensuring effective field delivery and understanding of safety standards, programs and safety communication
  • Developing creative ways to ensure the organization's safety culture is improved
  • Assist, as a subject matter expert, in the development of training programs to develop the skills of personnel in HSE related matters
  • Assist in the development of SMART annual safety performance objectives and targets, and provide stewardship to such, on a regular basis
  • Formulate training and educational materials to create a safe environment for employees
  • Review and update policies, procedures and work practices on an ongoing basis, and verify compliance with health and safety regulations
  • Remain current of all HSE related legislation
  • Train employees on best practices to ensure safety while completing day to day work
  • Engage in safety observations and carry out incident investigations and risk assessments
  • Respond to diverse/complex queries on a broad range of safety-related topics
  • Coordinate safety meetings
  • Other duties as assigned

Education & Experience:

  • Post-secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety
  • NCSO certification
  • CRSP designation an asset
  • 5 –10 years' experience directly related to safety, in field of upstream oil and gas, oil sands, or heavy construction industries
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License with clean abstract
  • Above average communication, facilitation and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of WCB claims managements systems and modified work programs
  • Ability to work and interact with people from diverse backgrounds is a must
  • Ability to identify problems/issues, and generate new solutions to complex problems
  • Strong computer skills, with advanced use of Excel and Word
  • Extensive knowledge of all relevant OH&S regulations and safety codes, and exceptional ability to interpret and communicate them
  • Must be self-motivated with excellent organization skills
  • CSTS and OSSA Regional Orientation or OSSA BSO (Basic Safety Orientation before December 31, 2018) or CSO (Common Safety Orientation after January 1, 2019)
