Line Handler
Primary Location: Kitimat, BC
Employee Status: Full Time or Part Time
Salary Range: CA$ 380 to 450 per day
The Company
Bridgemans Marine Transport (BMT) is a fully integrated marine service provider, equipped with marine certified crew and a fleet of unique assets servicing industrial projects around the world. Bridgemans and Haisla First Nation have created a joint venture limited partnership -Bridgemans Kitamaat Joint Venture Limited Partnership (BKJV) to provide marine and construction services to various industries on the Pacific Northcoast.
The Opportunity
As a Line Handler, you will be responsible for safely and efficiently handling mooring lines to secure ships during berthing and unberthing operations. Your role is crucial in ensuring the safety of vessels and personnel. Preference will be given to local candidates in the Kitimat and surrounding area.
Key Responsibilities
Responsibilities and essential job functions include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Assist in preparing messenger lines and reels, including checking their condition, length and appropriate attachment to bollards or cleats on the dock or ship.
- Safely handle mooring lines to secure ships to the dock during berthing and unberthing, following the company procedure and safety protocols.
- Maintain communication with the ships bridge crew and line handling supervisor to coordinate mooring operations, including signaling for line handling maneuvers.
- Monitor and adjust mooring line tension as needed to accommodate changes in tide, wind, or ship movement, ensuring the vessel remains safely moored
- Regularly inspect mooring/messenger lines, bollards, cleats, hydraulic capstans and related equipment for damage, wear, reporting any issues for maintenance or repair
- Be prepared to assist in emergency situations, such as sudden weather changes or vessel malfunctions, by quickly releasing or adjusting mooring lines as directed
- Adhere to safety regulations and guidelines for line handling operations, including wearing appropriate PPE, company uniforms and participating in safety drills/training.
- Assist with other dock operations as required
Qualifications
- Previous experience in ship mooring operations or maritime roles
- On-job training may be provided
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting and handling heavy mooring lines and working outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Effective verbal and non-verbal communication skills to coordinate with bridge crews, port personnel and fellow line handlers
- Knowledge of safety protocols and procedures for maritime operations with a focus on preventing accidents and injuries
- Keen attention to detail to ensure mooring lines are properly secured and maintained
- Additional certificates or training in line handling, maritime safety or related areas may be required
- MED-DVS / Radio Operator Certificate
- Ability to work flexible hours and rotation schedules, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as operations may operate on a 24/7 schedule
- Complete drug and alcohol testing if required
