The Shift Boss/Supervisor is a vital position for MacKay Contracting Ltd. to supervise the overall day to day performance, co-ordination, management, and maintenance of the specified mining shift to assist in obtaining maximum safety, productivity, efficiency, quality, service, and profitability for the organization while upholding all aspects of compliance and standards and adhering to budget and prescribed criteria. You will manage crews' attendance, absences, and time off requests, and report these activities to Project Manager for tracking purposes. This position reports to the Project Manager and General Manager.

Location and Hours:

This role will be located in the Sparwood, B.C. area, with hours specific to the project. Operations run 24/7 with both day and night shifts. The nature of your role will require you to travel within the area that your team covers. However, from time to time you may be expected to travel outside that area as the job role requires. You may be expected to work in accordance with the organization's overtime policies.

Main Responsibilities & Duties:

Responsibility to Staff and Team Direction:

In your management/supervisory role, you have responsibility for other team members who will all report directly to you.

  • supervise to ensure that the shift team is focused and delivers key priorities to include, but not limited to, high standards of health and safety, and good communication
  • maintain excellent operations and standards
  • supervise the storage, maintenance and use of plant and equipment used each shift
  • light vehicle maintenance and ensuring all Authorized Company Vehicle Driver and Company Vehicle Use Policies and Procedures are adhered to
  • equipment tracks cleaned as per set schedule
  • to assist in adhering to budget constraints and targets
  • responsibility to assist your Project Manager
  • assist in developing plans for progress and growth
  • meet your targets and those of the team as a whole
  • contribute to the overall development and maintenance of all projects
  • efficient running of the team
  • contribute to training and development of the team
  • perform and supervise all duties in compliance with health and safety and all related legal/statutory regulations, professional duties, responsibilities, and obligation

Day to Day Responsibilities at Agreed Locations:

  • responsibility for day-to-day shift planning and co-ordination of production levels, workers, equipment levels and supplies
  • responsibility for the daily schedule of work/shifts which includes maintaining time off requests
  • oversee shift process and providing appropriate instruction to designated team
  • monitor to ensure smooth shift operations
  • ensure adherence to all aspects of safety issues, particularly regarding mining equipment, raising any concerns with your Project Manager
  • within specified criteria and adhering to applicable plans (such as emergency planning) deal with issues/problems as they arise to minimise impact on production, or immediately refer to Project Manager
  • subject to specified criteria, recruitment, training (including on-use of equipment), set action and targets, appraise, and manage performance, development, coaching and general support of all team members to ensure targets are met
  • maintain accurate data/records/documentation
  • carry out prescribed tasks/projects in accordance with contract requirements
  • carry out allocated shift tasks/projects within set time limits
  • ensure compliance with quality standards, policies and procedures, codes of practice and legislation including health and safety & HSRC
  • immediately report problems/failures that may impact on the organization and/or its clients/customers to your Project Manager
  • responsibly use resources and control expenses to meet budgetary controls
  • adhere to all organization policies and procedures
  • set an example for team members of commitment, discipline, work ethics and habits and personal character
  • ensure daily timesheets are submitted by each team member, and reviewed/approved for submission to Payroll
  • ensure daily FLHA's are submitted; familiarity with SiteDocs is an asset
  • from time-to-time you may be expected to be part of special projects as are reasonably required of your job role
  • additional duties as may be assigned

You are responsible for your allocated workload and must meet all targets as agreed to with your Project Manager. You must contribute towards the smooth running of the organization generally.

The role is part of the whole organization team and as such requires you to perform such reasonable tasks that are required, as and when necessary, to maintain, promote, develop, and expand the business of our organization and its interests generally.

You must carry out your duties to the best of your ability, having consideration for the needs of your colleagues, the Organization, and its clients/customers. You must obey all lawful and reasonable orders given to you and comply with the Organizations' rules, procedures, and policies.

Responsibility to Equipment:

You are responsible for the equipment provided to you for use in your job role and to your team. This means you must ensure that equipment is used in accordance with training provided, the entire organizations' policies and procedures, and the law, and using where applicable any safety equipment or Personal Protective Equipment provided. You are responsible for ensuring that the equipment used by the team is maintained and can be used/operated at all times and that employees are adequately trained on each machine and that this training is documented.

Qualifications & Skills:

You need to have and maintain (with regular training and updates as necessary) the knowledge, technical skills and qualifications that are necessary to perform your job role to comply with the requirements of the Organization and any applicable rules, regulations (particularly of any professional body) and with any law which applies to your job role.

Requirements:

  • valid B.C. Mine Supervisor Certificate
  • holding a Shift Boss Certificate is an asset
  • to demonstrate knowledge of HSRC & other applicable codes, standards, and regulations for this role
  • Standard First Aid for Mining certification
  • pre-authorized access to Teck sites
  • proven ability in storage, maintenance and use of plant and equipment on a loss-preventative basis
  • experience (minimum 5 years) in this type of job role
  • requisite knowledge of the machinery, tools, equipment, and materials common to the role
  • proficient skills in computers, and Microsoft systems including MS Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams
  • aptitude for mining supervision and associated relationship management
  • leadership with ability to supervise and motivate a team
  • proven ability to develop others
  • demonstrable deadline/time management and task management skills
  • high degree of integrity and honesty in all dealings
  • excellent analytical, interpersonal, organizational and communication skills
  • ability to work under pressure
  • ability to work in all weather conditions
  • minimum Class 5 driver's licence
  • a high level of initiative and a positive attitude
  • to be able to give and follow both oral and written instructions
  • excellent interpersonal communication and influencing skills with internal and external stakeholders at all levels

Special Working Conditions:

On Teck sites, you will need to submit in a timely manner Permits To Work for your crews. You must not be banned from working on Teck sites, and Teck online training modules must be successfully completed.
