Responsibilities
- Lead and own the safety management system, including trending and KPI management to improve safety performance.
- Develop, implement, and maintain health and safety protocols that exceed regulatory requirements.
- Perform comprehensive risk analysis and coach teams on hazard identification and mitigation techniques.
- Take ownership of Pre-Start Safety Review (PSR) processes, ensuring compliance in process design, application, and software safety standards.
- Serve as the primary liaison with the Ministry of Labour and ensure all safety regulations are followed.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure safety considerations are embedded in all process improvement efforts.
- Conduct regular audits of health and safety management systems and drive risk mitigation plans, ensuring corrective actions are completed.
- Mentor and support the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) to ensure full compliance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act (OHSA) and all relevant regulations.
- Develop and maintain safety programs that meet or exceed OHSA, Workplace Safety & Insurance Board (WSIB), and other industry-specific safety standards.
- Be available for flexible scheduling, including after-hours support, to address any urgent safety issues.
Skills and Qualifications
- Occupational Health & Safety Certificate/Diploma or Bachelor's degree in chemical or mechanical engineering required. Minimum of 2-5 years of experience in an engineering role with a strong focus on safety, such as plant or process engineering, project design, or technical services.
- In-depth knowledge of OHSA regulations, process hazards, failure mechanisms, and industrial safeguards.
- Expertise in Classifications of Hazardous Areas / Hazloc and experience conducting safety audits.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for effective engagement with workgroups and external stakeholders, including regulatory bodies and contractors.
