What is the opportunity?

As the Design Manager, you will lead the design management efforts for complex transportation infrastructure projects, including commuter rail and subway station designs. This is a critical leadership role where you will be responsible for overseeing the design process, managing multi-discipline design teams, coordinating with the project manager, collaborating with the client and other stakeholders, ensuring quality, and driving successful design deliverables from concept to completion.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design Leadership: Lead and manage the project design teams for large transportation infrastructure projects, with a focus on commuter rail, subway stations, multi-modal transit hubs, and related transportation systems.
  • Project Oversight: Oversee the architectural and engineering design process from initial concept through detailed design, ensuring all work aligns with project requirements, regulatory standards, and project budgets.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with project managers, architects, engineers, sub-consultants, operators, maintainers, and other internal and external stakeholders to define the project scope, objectives, and deliverables
  • Quality Assurance: In accordance with the project quality management plan, conduct quality checks and approve all technical designs, including plans, specifications, and reports, ensuring compliance with project requirements, industry standards and safety regulations.
  • Changes, Risk and Budget Management: In collaboration with the project manager, monitor and manage project design progress, changes, risks, budget, and schedule, identifying critical design issues early and recommending solutions to stay on track.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Communicate effectively with the client and their technical advisors, contractors, regulatory bodies, and other stakeholders, including in presentations, ensuring alignment on project requirements and addressing any concerns promptly.
  • Innovation and Sustainability: Promote innovative and sustainable design solutions that align with the latest advancements in transportation engineering, architectural, and environmental standards.
  • Mentorship and Team Development: Provide technical guidance and mentorship to multi-discipline design teams, fostering team integration, open communication, technical excellence, and a collaborative high-performance work environment.
  • Business Development: Assist in the preparation of proposals and technical presentations, leveraging your expertise to win new business opportunities and strengthen client relationships.

Requirements

What do you need to succeed?

  • Bachelor or Masters degree in civil engineering, Structural engineering, or a related field.
  • 15+ years of experience in engineering design and management, with a strong focus on transportation infrastructure such as commuter rail stations, subway stations, including upgrades to existing stations and transit-oriented development.
  • Proven experience in holistically managing and delivering complex, large-scale transportation projects, including inter-disciplinary design coordination, risk management, quality, schedule, and budget oversight.
  • Experience with various project delivery models such as Design-Bid-Build, Design-Build, Progressive Design-Build-Finance, Design-Build-Finance-Operate, P3 Design-Build Joint Venture, LEAN Design, Phased Tendering, and Alliance.
  • A proactive and innovative approach to transportation design integrating constructability and value engineering with a focus on sustainability and resilience.
  • In-depth knowledge of transportation engineering principles, transit station design, rail systems, and associated civil infrastructure.
  • Strong understanding of local and North American rail transportation and transit regulations, safety standards, and codes including NBC, OBC, AREMA, FTA, NFPA, and AODA.
  • Strong knowledge of design software (AutoCAD, Revit, BIM, etc.) and project management tools (e.g., MS Project, Primavera, DOORS).
  • Exceptional communication and leadership skills, with the ability to manage multidisciplinary teams and liaise with clients and stakeholders effectively.
  • Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng.) license or equivalent certification is highly preferred.
  • Strong problem solving skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously under tight deadlines.
