JOB SUMMARY:
The Cook will prepare and serve daily nutritional snacks and meals to the residents of the bed-based services according to the healthy menu plan they have prepared.
At times the Cook may need to cater for meetings in various Sagamok programs, and they may be needed to provide support to other nutritional programs when required.
POSITION DUTIES:
- Prepare and cook, a culturally appropriate menu inclusive of 2 hot meals and snacks daily, with attention to residents with food allergies or intolerances.
- With approval of the Supervisor, prepare menus, grocery lists, equipment requisitions, and purchase of food while staying within the confines of a limited budget.
- Consult with Supervisor (and nutritionist on occasional basis) in the preparation of menu.
- Must ensure that proper procedures are followed for food storage, safe food handling practices and prevention of food poisoning.
- Must maintain an inventory of kitchen equipment, supplies and an inventory of food on hand.
- Maintaining kitchen facilities and work area in a hygienic, sanitary, and safe environment.
- Other related duties as assigned.
- Assisting staff with clients in the event of an emergency.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- Must maintain strict confidentiality in accordance with policies approved by Sagamok Anishnawbek.
- Must provide a negative Vulnerable Sector Check prior to commencing employment.
- Able to use First Aid and CPR skills in case of a sudden emergency.
- Non allergic to cleaning chemicals.
- Must be able to work as a team member and at times with minimal supervision.
- Valid driver's license and vehicle for on-the-job use.
- Must wear scrubs and proper footwear while on duty.
- Knowledge of and respect for Anishnawbek history, practices, teachings, language, values, and beliefs.
- Subject to six months' probation.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum 1 to 3 years' experience in food handling and food preparation.
- Valid Safe Food Handlers Certificate (or willing to obtain)
- Valid First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate.
- Knowledge of nutritional needs of adults as per the Canada's Food Guidelines.
- Knowledge of traditional foods and their preparation
- Must be able to follow recommendations and instructions (e.g., advice on special diet or allergies)
- Ability to analyze current inventory and develop daily prep lists to control food waste and spoilage.
- Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of sanitation and safety guidelines, being thoroughly familiar with the causes of food poisoning and methods of prevention.
