Summary/Objective

This position interacts directly with client families during their time of need and is responsible for creating and maintaining a premier level of client family satisfaction.

Essential Functions

  • Assists the Funeral Director in the movement of the casketed deceased and other related paraphernalia in and out of the visitation area, funeral home chapel, church or other place of service.
  • Performs a variety of tasks during funerals to assist Funeral Directors and to ensure that services run smoothly and as planned
  • Assist with the transferring of cremated remains into urns, keepsakes and parcels as required.
  • Greets customer at the funeral home and set the example in presenting warmth, compassion, empathy, good manners, and diplomacy to grieving family members and guests.
  • Drives a hearse, family limousine or other transportation vehicle in the funeral procession and/or for other funeral related activity.
  • Transports the deceased to and/or from the funeral home from hospitals, homes, nursing homes, among others.
  • Cleans funeral vehicles, such as cars or hearses.
  • Reports vehicle or facility maintenance as needed.
  • Supervises funeral processions and assists with cemetery parking.
  • Itemizes and labels personal effects of the deceased.
  • Issues and stores funeral equipment.
  • Directs or escorts mourners to parlors or chapels in which wakes or funerals are being held
  • Offers assistance to mourners as they enter or exit limousines or other forms of transportation.
  • Handles customer changes with willingness, friendliness, and a “can-do” attitude but accommodating customer needs with flexibility.
  • Obtains burial permits and register deaths.
  • Prepares administrative documents as required.
  • Obtains doctors' signatures on death certificate and complete other paperwork, such as insurance claim forms.
  • Places caskets in parlors/chapels prior to wakes or funerals and assist with casketing of the deceased as required.
  • Acts as a pallbearer.
  • Performs general maintenance tasks for funeral homes, such as maintaining equipment or caring for funeral grounds.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Education, Experience, Certifications and Licensure

  • Possess a valid driver's license in good standing.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize and differentiate level of importance.
  • Must be able to work both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Must be able to handle emotional situations with professionalism and compassion.
  • Excellent attention to detail and high degree of accuracy.
  • Proficient using MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and funeral software.
  • Standing for long periods of time is required.

  • Able to read, write and speak English fluently. Bilingual is a plus.

  • Tactful and professional when dealing with complaints or dissatisfaction with services or merchandise.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • The duties associated with this position are generally performed in an indoor office setting.
  • Outdoor duties may require exposure to natural elements such as inclement weather, extreme temperatures, uneven ground, dust, gas, and/or fumes.
  • Equipment used to perform the essential function of this position includes, but is not limited to; computer, fax, copier, multi-line phone system, AV system, body lift, casket handling/transport devices, personal or company owned vehicle.
  • Employees in this role are regularly required to climb, sit, stand, bend, kneel, and frequently lift up to 75 pounds and may be required to lift up to 150 pounds.
  • This position may also require reaching, pushing, and pulling.
  • This position may also be exposed to chemicals and/ or blood borne pathogens. Exposure risk is considered: Low

Travel

  • This position may require up to 10 percent out of area and overnight travel.
  • Travel is primarily local occurring during the business day only.
