Role:
The Building Automation Estimator will be responsible for the accurate, timely preparation of full-cost estimates for projects, including materials and labour. Projects can range from Bid-spec to Renovation Additions and Design-Build. The Building Automation Estimator must have a good working knowledge of both Mechanical and Electrical Systems to properly quote Mechanical, Controls and Electrical Wiring aspects of projects. The Building Automation Estimator shall be fluent in Office 365 including Dynamics, Procore and Cube Estimating/Design Software or an applicable comparable.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
- Complete in full; Estimate closings
- Attend and participate in site-visits, pre-bid meeting, and post-bid meeting as required
- Prepare and/or coordinate the preparation of full cost estimates on conceptual, design-build or general tender work, up to any size and complexity.
- Prepare materials, labour and equipment cost estimations according to proposals, plans, estimates, and specifications; without supervision, including project closings.
- Reviews data to determine material and labor requirements & prepares itemized lists.
- Quantifying takeoffs including entry into a computerized estimating system
- Perform quotation of change notices.
- Consult with clients, vendors, or other individuals to discuss and formulate estimates and resolve issues.
- Participate in estimating turnover meetings with the project team to assist in planning and budget process
- Prepare quotations and budget using drawings, documents, and instructions that may be less than 100% complete
- Prepare and maintain a list of suppliers, contractors and sub-trades and negotiate with them as necessary to obtain the most competitive and profitable prices.
- Interfaces with other individuals in the organization to obtain support and commitment to the cost estimates.
- Organizes and manages a centralized cost estimating database and a formal process to support cost estimating to ensure historical data is utilized.
- Reviewing final cost report with project team and develop for historical information
- Analyzes completed projects to compare estimated costs to actual costs and determine the reason for any discrepancies.
- Provides improvement recommendations to cost estimating procedures to reduce future discrepancies between estimated and actual costs.
- Identifies cost trends to assist management in cost reduction and process improvement efforts.
- Responsible for setting up and maintaining the Estimating Software Database with up-to-date material pricing
- Participate in Project kick-off and close-out meetings
- Other duties as assigned to meet Company objectives.
Educational And Professional Requirements:
- Engineering degree (Eng.) from four-year college or university, or a minimum of five (5) years estimating experience in the Building Automation industry, and practical knowledge of field requirements and restrictions; OR
- Minimum of five years Building Automation field experience and/or training; OR
- Equivalent combination of education and experience; and successful completion of estimating program in post-secondary education environment.
- Prior experience with Studio 360 is an asset.
- Fundamental understanding of Johnson Controls, Schneider, Honeywell Building Automation Systems.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Working Conditions:

- Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals.
- Overtime as required.
