Environmental Specialist (Field Operations)

The Work

Fieldwork

  • Focus: Perform field tasks primarily on oil & gas, pipeline, construction, infrastructure, and renewable energy projects as part of a multi-disciplinary, virtual team.
  • Shifts: Expect irregular field shifts, typically lasting between 2-10 days, though longer shifts may be required. Overnight stays in hotels or camps may also be necessary.
  • Geographic Scope: Majority of projects are located in Alberta
  • Data Collection and Monitoring: Conduct environmental field data collection and construction monitoring activities.
  • Adverse Conditions: Be prepared to work in remote locations and challenging conditions like muddy roads, steep terrain, and snowy environments.
  • Physical Demands: Carry field equipment such as soil sampling tools and other required gear (Up to 30lb)
  • Technical Strength: Expertise in the following areas is required:
    • Fish salvage/fish habitat
    • Water quality monitoring (turbidity)
    • Wildlife surveys and sweeps
    • Wetland and vegetation ecology
    • Construction monitoring
    • Pipeline HDD fluids sampling
    • Soil sampling

Equipment and Tools

  • Vehicle Operation: Drive light-duty trucks, ATVs, UTVs, and trailers. A valid driver's license is required.
  • Field Tools: Use navigational and data collection tools such as Garmin GPS, Avenza, Collector, etc.

Collaboration and Communication

  • CORE Values: Demonstrate a commitment to CORE values in all professional activities.
  • Team Collaboration: Collaborate with other CORE team members and client field representatives as required.
  • Communication: Maintain strong verbal and written communication skills to convey information effectively.

Administrative and Support Tasks

  • Administrative Work: Complete QA/QC, data entry, and submission of field data on time.
  • Meetings and Training: Attend meetings and training sessions as needed.

Availability

  • Excluding vacation or allotted personal days, Field staff must be available for field work up to 20 days per month, including up to 2 weekends per month.
  • Excluding vacation or allotted personal days, 10-11 days off can be anticipated per month (i.e., 2-3 more days than other roles).

What you bring to the table

  • A diploma or bachelor's degree in conservation biology, land reclamation, natural resource management or forestry
  • 3-7 years of relevant experience
  • Experience as a Crew Leader
  • Positive demeanor
  • The ability to liaise with clients and make professional in-field decisions.
  • A love for being on the road and working in both natural and construction environments is essential.
  • Physically fit with the ability to walk extended distances in challenging field conditions.

The Workplace:

  • This is a field position, which includes working in a virtual environment from your home office as well as 2-10 day field shifts, as the need arises.
