WHAT YOU'LL DO:

We are seeking a detail-oriented and skilled Senior Forest Analyst to join our analyst team. The Forest Analyst will use analytic tools such as Python, ArcGIS Pro, R, and Patchworks to help answer forest management questions for a wide array of clients. Project examples include:

  • Conducting forest resource analyses in support of Allowable Annual Cut determinations.
  • Conducting forest resource analyses to identify suitable tenure opportunities.
  • Leveraging forest inventory and forest management datasets to identify current harvest opportunities.
  • Incorporating economic assumptions into forest estate models to assist with operational planning and fibre flow optimization.
  • Developing and maintaining scripts to assess the status of forest management indicators, such as seral stage targets and wildlife habitat measures.
  • Quantifying carbon stocks/changes resulting from forest management
  • Supporting Forest Landscape Planning tables in making trade off decisions.

Key responsibilities are:

  • Independently conduct all phases of complex analytical projects (e.g., forest resource analysis)
    • Uses knowledge of forest management and communication skills to develop analysis assumption in collaboration with clients
  • Uses analytical skills to efficiently conduct spatial/tabular data processing with ArcGIS, and Python scripting (ArcPy, Pandas, NumPy)
    • Uses analytical skills and knowledge of silviculture datasets to develop yield curves with Python, TIPSY and VDYP
    • Uses knowledge of forest estate modelling to develop models in Patchworks
    • Uses writing and data visualization skills to author professional analysis reports
    • Critically assesses analytical methods and products throughout the analysis process
  • Develop and apply unique analytical skills and creativity to develop novel data driven solutions to challenges facing clients, using tools such as Python, R, ArcGIS Pro, Excel, Tableau, and CBM-CFS3.
  • Work as part of a team to receive and provide analytical support with large strategic planning processes.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

  • Bachelor's degree in Forestry, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, or a related field. Master's degree is a plus.
  • At least 3 years experience in forest analysis, forest inventory, or applied GIS in forestry.
  • Proficiency in GIS software (ArcGIS, QGIS) and forest modelling software. Familiarity with data analysis tools (Excel, R, Python) is preferred.
  • Understanding of forest management principles, growth and yield modelling, and sustainable forestry practices.
