About Smithers Community Services Association:
Founded in 1973, Smithers Community Services Association is dedicated to provision of services which enhance the quality of life and promote equal opportunity for all people within our communities. Working in partnership with our staff, volunteers and clients, we strive for excellence in advocacy, service development and program delivery. We currently have a staff of about 70 people.

Over the last 50 years, SCSA has offered numerous services to the community that changed as the needs of Smithers and area change. Today's SCSA operates numerous programs in the community. We provide services for people with developmental disabilities, parenting programs, youth programs, public transit systems, and family housing sponsored by BC Housing.

Position Summary:
Reporting to the Executive Director and Acting HR Director, the HR Generalist will play a key role in recruitment, selection and orientation of new employees, performance management and development, employee relations, staff training, benefits administration, health and safety oversight and other HR functions. As a trusted consultant, the HR Generalist works with the management team to address their human resources needs through an analysis of short, medium- and long-term requirements, the implementation of best practices, and developing plans to address issues and monitor results. This position acts as the primary point of contact for front-line employees seeking assistance with issues that require specialized knowledge or skills. This position offers an opportunity to advance within the organization.

Key Duties of the Position:

  • Support the development and implementation of HR initiatives and systems.
  • Provide counseling to all employees on policies and procedures.
  • Be actively involved in recruitment by preparing job descriptions, posting ads and managing the hiring process.
  • Create and implement effective on-boarding plans.
  • Develop training and staff development programs.
  • Assist in performance management processes.
  • Support the management of disciplinary and conduct issues.
  • Maintain employee records (attendance, leaves, EDI data etc.) according to policy and legal requirements.
  • Review employment and working conditions to ensure legal compliance

What you will bring:

  • Knowledge of human resources skills and procedures normally acquired through a combination of post-secondary education and experience.
  • Documented experience in human resources management (HRM)
  • Knowledge and experience in the application of practices and laws governing human resources.
  • Knowledge of HRM challenges, trends and best practices.
  • Knowledge and experience in the application and interpretation of organizational policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience using Windows software such as word processors, spreadsheets, databases, e-mail and the Internet.
  • Familiarity with HRM software (e.g. Bamboo) or ability to quickly master it.
  • Experience in analysis and problem-solving.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, in a team environment, under pressure with firm deadlines.
  • Initiative, leadership, judgment and autonomy.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Proven ability to work with discretion and tact.
  • Understanding and sensitivity towards Indigenous cultures.
