Position Overview

The Project Manager is responsible for providing leadership, supervision, and direction to stakeholders and employees. This position encompasses the construction project team lead duties which involves providing direction and instruction to all members on the construction project team and ensuring all tasks are properly completed in a safe and timely manner. This person is also directly involved with the growth and development of the construction division, must assist in recruiting talented individuals, securing new clients, creating, and implementing approved processes and procedures for increased efficiency and profitability. The Project Manager is also responsible for instructing, reviewing, implementing the Company Policies and Safety program.

Essential Job Functions

Project Planning & Execution

    • Prepare and/or participate in all estimates required under his umbrella of work locations.
    • Identify project hazards, challenges, milestones and provide recommendations for success.
    • Assist in the preparation of a project specific statement of requirements and project plan in conjunction with Operations Manager, HSE Project Coordinator, Superintendent and Supervisor.
    • Determine manpower requirements and qualifications (site superintendent, supervisors, coordinators, trades, etc.)
    • Assist in recruiting and training supervisors and field workers as required.
    • Participate in the negotiation and selection of sub-contractors and follow ESS's Subcontractor Management Program.
    • Create and maintain project schedules for manpower, equipment, and vendors requirements.
    • Assist Cost Controller in developing Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), budgets, Commitments and Prime Contracts. Educate and coach supervisors on project specific cost coding.
    • Manage material approvals, alternates, shop drawings, product data sheets, deliveries, etc.
    • Review contract documents such as scope of work, addendums & drawings with site personnel (site superintendents, supervisors, project coordinators & safety representation).
    • Assist in preparing JHA and PHRs, etc. with HSE Coordinator and Supervisors. Review and obtain approval of such documents from the clients and have them reviewed / signed by the workers.
    • Confirm all project resources and corresponding documentation are on hand and monitor through project completion and if applicable returned to inventory.
    • Prepare commissioning / closeout plan.

Related Management Skills

    • Monitor budget and analyze project deviations, underruns, and overruns.
    • Participate in the hiring process and/or dismissal of staff and consultants.
    • Respond clearly and promptly to client, ESS's Senior Management and staff's verbal and written requests.
    • Identify and resolve potential conflicts involving staff, stakeholders, consultants, customers, and vendors.
    • Communicate and monitor programs, systems, policies, and performance expectations.
    • Establish and maintain appropriate communications and relations.
    • Utilize MS 365 and Procore to control documents and ensure availability when required.
    • Generate and submit reports required by employer and customer as per deadlines provided.
    • Conduct superintendent or supervisor performance evaluations and make recommendations for performance improvements and promotions.
    • Keep abreast of technological changes in the industry.

Contract Administration

    • Review and consult with operation team members daily for resource availability and scheduling.
    • Have client and/or subcontractor's safety representation visit work areas as required.
    • Review, approve, apply, and monitor project safety program.
    • Always ensure adequate safety representation.
    • Ensure employee safety by reviewing audits prepared by the safety department.
    • Co-ordinate additional contracts/suppliers outside of base contract.
    • Follow and coach change management procedures.
    • Ensure compliance with all contractual aspects (e.g. Reporting, Standards, Quality Assurance, Billing, etc.)
    • Ensure quality control by leveraging Procore tools and visit worksites on a regular basis (minimum 1 visit per week).
    • Ensure that the required inspections/testing are performed as per applicable standards.
    • Attend site meetings as required.
    • Produce, monitor progress and update schedule as per contractual agreements.
    • Assist in resolving billing issues promptly (and escalate accordingly, as required).
    • Identify potential project and manpower issues and address them timely manner.
    • Hold weekly project management meetings with ESS operations team to discuss current workload, manpower and upcoming projects.
    • Hold weekly project status meetings with ESS site personnel (including Superintendent, Supervisors, Coordinator, Safety Coordinator).
    • Approve applicable timesheets daily.
    • Maintain daily communication with supervisor for project success.
    • Generate reports to Operations Manager and Customer.

Project Closeout

    • Ensure deficiency lists are created and resolved.
    • Communicate promptly to Operations Manager completion of project.
    • Direct commissioning/closeout plan effectively in a timely manner.
    • Initiate substantial and final completion process.
    • Initiate a warranty claim.
    • Chair internal lessons learned meetings.
    • Hand over project to owner.

Education/Experience Requirements

  • Minimum Education: Graduation from a 3 year College Program or University Degree and/or related industry specific experience. Professional designations such as C.E.T., P. Eng, PMP are considered an asset.
  • Minimum Experience: 5+ years of experience in the mining/construction industry; experience in a supervisory role and sales related field.
  • Project Management techniques
  • Computers and software including MS 365 Pro and Procore
  • Sales, pricing and costing including forecasting
  • Good knowledge of the construction regulations
  • Contract structures and contract negotiation
  • Represent the company in a professional manner at all times (excellent communication, dress code, proper PPE, etc.)
  • Act in a lead capacity
  • Grasp the key points from complicated details
  • Lead projects to successful completion and motivate a team
  • Deal with multiple stakeholders

Work location/Schedule

The Project Manager works regular day shifts, with a schedule based on average 50 hours per week. Some evening and weekend work, as well as on-call work, may result in work beyond your regularly scheduled hours. This position requires frequent local travel to office, project locations and occasional travel to remote project locations; therefore, a valid driver's license and clean driving record are necessary.
