Job Summary

The Head Hockey Instructor is to execute world-class hockey and skating development programs at the Bell Sensplex, Cavanagh Sensplex, Richcraft Sensplex, and other facilities as required, in keeping with the Ottawa Senators Hockey Programs player development philosophies. The Head Hockey Instructor will be responsible for helping participants achieve their maximum potential by leading ice sessions which challenge players of all abilities in a competitive but fun environment. They will work as a talent evaluator and coach for competitive and elite programs such as the Senators Spring AAA Hockey Development Program in games, practices and tournaments. The successful candidate will also be responsible for training, coaching, and evaluating all instructional staff for hockey and skating programming run by Capital Sports Management Inc. (CSMI) and other duties relating to hockey skill development as requested by the Head of Hockey Development.

This position will feature work at the Bell Sensplex (Ottawa West), Richcraft Sensplex (Ottawa East), and occasionally at the Cavanagh Sensplex (West Carleton). The majority of this role will involve on-ice instruction for programs operating during evening and/or weekend time periods, with remaining full-time hours spent in-office on administrative tasks related to these programs.

  • Prepare and execute innovative drills which challenge and maximize the potential of players of all levels
  • Responsible for assisting with the training of instructors to ensure they provide high quality instruction in a positive, supportive, and fun environment for program participants AND have a high working knowledge of the proper teaching techniques for all aspects of hockey & skating skill development
  • Lead on-ice sessions of CSMI programs based on a schedule approved by the Head of Hockey Development.
  • Assist with the development, content-management, and continuous improvement of hockey and skating programs as requested.
  • Execute on-ice skill development & conditioning sessions in a lead role primarily on evenings, weekends and some weekday mornings.
  • Work as a Head and/or Assistant Coach for competitive & elite programs such as the Senators Spring AAA Hockey Development Program (including player recruitment and evaluation).
  • Supervise all instructors to ensure they are giving constant feedback, detecting and correcting errors, and pushing all participants to perform outside of their comfort zones to achieve maximum development.
  • Conduct formal and informal coaching session with part-time instructors.
  • Assist the Head of Hockey Development to lead training and development session for part-time team members
  • Building relationships with participants and/or parents and minor hockey association executives on a regular basis and as specific issues arise, in a professional and positive manner
  • Responsible for conducting regular instructor evaluations and coaching sessions of on-ice staff and assisting the Head of Hockey Development with formal part-time team member semi-annual performance reviews
  • Responsible for following policies and procedures set out by the Director, Hockey Programs, CSMI, and the Senators Sports & Entertainment group of companies and for ensuring all instructional staff do the same
  • Assist with the marketing of CSMI programs when needed (including phone & e-mail communication, and in-person meetings with groups or individuals in our target market)
  • Design and execute youth hockey skills competitions as part of CSMI-run tournaments
  • Assist with other CSMI programs, leagues, or tournaments as requested
  • Other duties as assigned by the Head of Hockey Development, or Senior Director, Revenue & Hockey Programs

Job Requirements

  • Minimum three years coaching and/or player development experience
  • NCCP Certified Coach (Development I or High Performance I an asset)
  • Extensive experience as a player and/or coach at an elite level
  • Able to work under pressure, prioritize, and meet deadlines
  • Able to work unsupervised
  • Good communication ability and well-organized
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues appropriately
  • Attention to detail
  • Team player
  • Must be willing to work a varied schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Bilingualism an asset (French & English)
