The Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada (APFC) is an independent, not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting Canada's relations with Asia. APFC's mission is to serve as a catalyst for expanding opportunities and collaboration between Canada and Asia. The Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada is seeking a seasoned Senior Program Manager, Northeast Asia, on a full-time basis. The Senior Program Manager, Northeast Asia, is responsible for the design, development, and execution of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada's (APFC) research and programs focused on Northeast Asia, including the Korean Peninsula, Japan, and Mongolia. The role involves producing policy-relevant analysis, convening events, and fostering closer ties between Canadian and Asian stakeholders. Reporting to the Vice-President of Research and Strategy, the individual will manage a team of junior research scholars and collaborate closely with internal and external partners to enhance APFC's engagement with the region.

Major Responsibilities

  • Research and Program Development - Develop and implement APFC's research agenda and programs on Northeast Asia, delivering timely, evidence-based insights and policy analysis relevant to Canadian business, government, and academia.
  • Knowledge Creation & Dissemination - Generate high-quality research products, including reports, policy briefs, insights, and case studies on topics of strategic importance to Canada's engagement with Northeast Asia.
  • Event Planning & Facilitation - Organize and participate in public and private roundtables, webinars, and expert discussions to promote dialogue on key developments in Northeast Asia and Canada's relationship with the region.
  • Regional Expertise - Provide up-to-date analysis on key geopolitical and socio-economic developments in Northeast Asia, including security, economic trends, and diplomatic relations, with a focus on Japan, South Korea, and Mongolia.
  • Partnership Development - Build and maintain strong relationships with think-tanks, universities, government agencies, and civil society organizations in Canada and Northeast Asia to expand APFC's reach and impact.
  • Management and Supervision - Supervise and mentor a team of junior research scholars, fostering a collaborative and high-performing team environment. Work closely with APFC's Distinguished Fellows and Senior Fellows on Northeast Asia research and program development.
  • Network Engagement - Contribute substantively to international networks such as APEC, PECC, ABAC by providing inputs and representing APFC in regional and global fora.

Desired Skills and Abilities

Successful applicants will have the following qualifications and skills:

  • A PhD or a graduate degree (M.A./M.Sc.) in a relevant field such as Political Science, International Relations, Asian Studies, Sociology, Economics, or related fields.
  • Minimum of 7 years of professional experience focused on Northeast Asia, with demonstrated expertise in the region's politics, society, economics, and international relations.
  • Proficiency in one or more Northeast Asian languages (Japanese, Korean) is desirable.
  • Strong background in both qualitative and/or quantitative research methods, with demonstrated ability to produce high-quality, policy-relevant analysis.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to present research findings and engage with diverse audiences, including government, business, and academia.
  • Proven ability to manage complex projects and teams, with experience developing budgets and work plans. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail are essential.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative environment, with experience in mentoring and managing research teams.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Familiarity with productivity platforms such as Slack, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom.
  • Experience using data analysis tools or software (desirable).

Eligibility

Applicants should have a valid and legal authorization to work in Canada upon application and have a PhD or a graduate degree (M.A./M.Sc.) in a relevant field such as Political Science, International Relations, Asian Studies, Sociology, Economics, or related fields.

The successful applicant will ideally be based either in our Vancouver or Toronto offices, working on a hybrid schedule Monday through Friday during regular office hours, five days a week. A remote work arrangement may be a possibility.

Compensation

The annual base salary range for this position is $75,000.00 - $90,000.00. Depending on a combination of factors, including the candidate's relevant experience and level of expertise, the target pay for this role is no more than the midpoint of this range. APF Canada also offers a comprehensive extended health benefits package including but not limited to vision and dental care, paramedical services, telemedicine, a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) matching contribution and an Employee & Family Assistance Program (E&FAP) among others.
