The Cook reports to the Culinary Services Manager and is expected to demonstrate commitment to resident safety by providing high-quality care in accordance with the organization's vision and mission.
Responsibilities:
- Prepare high-quality, nutritious meals according to the menu plan and regulatory requirements.
- Plate meals and ensure resident food preferences are respected, making each meal an experience rather than a task.
- Maintain a clean kitchen area and equipment.
- Supervise and direct Dietary Aides in basic food preparation and meal service.
- Manage resources within a set budget, minimize waste, and follow residence policies and procedures.
- Maintain a safe working environment.
- Keep necessary records in the absence of the Food Service Manager, such as menu changes, purchase orders, delivery receipts, and temperature checks.
- Participate in the FIFO process for food and supply products.
- Collaborate effectively with all Food Services and other departmental associates.
- Perform additional tasks as assigned.
Qualifications
- Possess a current certificate in food handling training from a local health board or equivalent, or training can be provided.
- Culinary designation/diploma or equivalent designation is an asset.
- Previous experience in a healthcare or hospitality setting is beneficial.
- Familiarity with weights, measurements, recipe conversions, and portion control.
- Knowledge of Ontario Food Premises Regulations, Canada's Food Guide to Healthy Eating, and therapeutic diets.
- Understanding of Hazardous Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP), Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), Occupational Health and Safety, and Sanitation Code.
- Physically and mentally capable of performing assigned duties.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to work independently and within a team.
- Compassionate understanding of seniors' needs.
- Must be free of communicable diseases.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
- Clear vulnerable sector screening (within the last 6 months), recent TB test results (within the last 6 months) or chest X-ray (within the last year), and two supervisory references required.
