The Butterfly Program Therapist reports to the Programs Manager and participates as a member of the interdisciplinary team to plan, implement and evaluate programs, outings and events that meet the residents' physical, social, emotional, cognitive, spiritual and cultural needs. They are also a member of our accredited Butterfly neighbourhood, adhering to the Butterfly Oath and following the standards of our Person Centered Care Approach.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan, implement and evaluate both individual and group activation program on Willowvale based on assessed needs and as assigned by the Supervisor,
  • Implementing experiences that go with the flow of mealtimes happening in the Kitchen/Dining Room spaces
  • Staging resident spaces with items for meaningful engagement and ensuring residents are not left without providing any type of engagement
  • Monitor the behavior and condition of residents during programs, and report any significant changes to the Supervisor and nursing staff as appropriate, and attend meetings related to resident's participation in recreation
  • Maintain program and resident records according to department policy. Communicate participation by residents to registered staff
  • Work cooperatively with other departments to meet resident need
  • Assist in all shift meal times
  • Collaborate with other Butterfly program therapist and create Calendar specifically for butterfly neighborhood and ensure engagement moments are communicated with and ensured on registered staff's “What's the plan for the day” shift exchange huddle
  • Sign and adhere to the Butterfly Oath


Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary diploma or degree in recreation and leisure studies, therapeutic recreation, kinesiology, or another related field from a community college or university.
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills, as well as excellent documentation skills
  • Knowledge and demonstrated experience in one-one/group program planning, implementation, and evaluation for both well and the cognitively impaired,
  • Ability to work independently and the ability to manage time effectively,
  • Ability to plan, implement, evaluate new ideas, resident programs, and volunteer initiatives
  • Ability to provide meaningful engagement outside of scheduled programming
  • Knowledge and/or experience in working with the geriatric population especially those with cognitive impairments
  • Fun, enthusiastic, creative
  • Current CPR/First-Aid and Food Handler's certification,
  • Knowledge of MDS/RAI would be an asset,
  • GPA and Montessori certificates would be an asset.
  • Knowledge and/or experience working in a Butterfly home an asse
  • Second Language (Chinese, Portuguese, Italian, and Eastern European languages are an asset)
  • CPR and First Aid qualifications
  • To show evidence of being focused on people's feelings when interacting and knowing how to turn a task into positive social interaction.
  • To undertake and meet all legal requirements within a context of promoting individuals' rights and measuring/reducing elements of risk.
  • Must provide a complete and current (within six months) Vulnerable Sector Check (including a Criminal Background Check) or be willing to obtain one
  • As a condition of employment, candidates are required to submit documented results of TB testing (within the last six months or within 14 days upon hire) or a chest X-ray (within the last year), as per Public Health requirements
  • Two supervisory references required
