POSITION SUMMARY

The Custodian is responsible for performing custodial duties, minor maintenance and other miscellaneous duties in order to ensure that buildings and facilities are maintained in a healthy, safe and sanitary manner.

We are currently seeking an on-call custodian (when needed).

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Clean offices, meeting chambers and other band facilities.
  • Mop tile and concrete floor areas, vacuum all carpeted areas.
  • Dust all furniture and fixtures, woodwork, and equipment.
  • Wash and disinfect all washroom floors, toilets, toilet seats, hand dryers and fixtures. Replenish toilet tissue, paper towels and soap as needed.
  • Clean all mirrors; empty all waste baskets and garbage cans.
  • Place garbage in outside storage bin.
  • Clean entrances and exits including glass, doors and hardware.
  • Keep outside area near exit and entrance clear of snow, cans, paper, etc.
  • Clean, wash and disinfect drinking fountains.
  • Clean kitchen sinks, counters and appliances; replenish paper towel, soap etc.
  • Report damages and acts of vandalism.
  • Wash and buff floors with floor polisher.
  • Spot clean walls and toilet partitions.
  • Move and arrange chairs, tables and other furniture or equipment.
  • Assist with heavy work in kitchen and cafeteria.
  • Check windows and doors to see that they are closed and locked.
  • May make minor repairs to furniture, electrical fixtures, windows and shades, locks, faucets, heating system and other equipment.
  • May undertake routine maintenance tasks related to building operating systems, ie) changing filters, etc.
  • May perform grounds work, including clearing snow, mowing lawns, raking leaves, trimming shrubs, and
    general grounds maintenance such as clearing litter and debris.
  • Notify supervisor of any deficiencies that will require the use of contractors/repairs.
  • Perform seasonal cleaning tasks as required. Including: waxing floors, washing windows, building exterior
    cleaning, etc.
  • Use appropriate safety equipment at all times.
  • Ensure cleaning materials and supplies are stored in a safe and orderly manner.
  • Works in cooperation with other maintenance staff to correct safety deficiencies.
  • Additional responsibilities as needed to support the community and uphold our shared values.
  • Other duties or responsibilities as assigned by your Supervisor, Manager, Director, Chief Administrative Officer, or Chief & Council.

WHAT YOU BRING

Qualifications

  • High school Diploma or GED.
  • Knowledge of standard cleaning procedures, chemicals, products, and equipment.
  • Ability to read and understand labels and instructions, particularly on the use and application of cleaning chemicals and products.
  • Physically fit and able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Ability to safely use cleaning and maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision.
  • Must be punctual, trustworthy, and able to work independently to complete assigned tasks.
  • Familiar with Safety Data Sheets
  • WHMIS Training
  • First Aid Level 1

Working / Special Conditions

  • Initial and ongoing employment is subject to submission of a clear Criminal Record Review Program Check to ensure the safety and trust of the communities we serve. This check will be conducted every five years.
  • Initial and ongoing commitment to the values and guidelines of Sq'éwqel (Seabird Island Band), including our policies, procedures, standards of practice, and laws, is essential. This commitment supports our collective work, the community, and the responsibilities of this role.
  • Flexibility in working hours may be required, including evenings and weekends, to accommodate the cleaning of various areas. Employees will be given as much notice as possible to any changes in schedule.

Preferred

  • Knowledge and understanding of Seabird Island's culture, traditions, teachings, community dynamics.
  • Ability to respond quickly and professionally to community or colleague needs and inquiries.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.

Reports to: Custodial Manager

All background checks, reference checks and criminal record checks are performed in accordance with Seabird Island Human Resources Policy Manual, protecting the integrity and confidentiality of information gathered during the evaluation.
