Job Description

The Professional Practice Clinician (PPC) for Inpatient Mental Health has responsibility for clinical teaching, staff development and advancing quality of care in the adult inpatient mental health units and the psychiatric intensive care unit at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. The PPC maintains a current knowledge base regarding evidence based and best practice for acute mental health care, drawing upon contemporary evidence and/or research-based practice methods and standards. The PPC implements and evaluates strategies to influence, engage, and facilitate the inter-professional practice team to build capacity and competence in acute mental health care. As a member of the Mental Health Program, the PPC works closely with the other team members, participating in clinical patient rounds, working collaboratively with the Program Director, Patient Care Manager, the Chief Nursing Officer and fellow PPCs, to plan, implement and evaluate activities related to staff and patient education. The PPC develops reviews and revises policies and procedures related to professional practice and clinical care, and provides supporting education and evaluation. The PPC also develops and monitors quality indicators within the program and actively participates in quality improvement activities.

As a member of the Office of Professional Practice, the PPC collaborates with other PPCs to plan and organize the Nursing Orientation Program, coordinate and assist with program quality management (audits), conduct follow-up activities, and plan and implement educational initiatives at program and corporate levels. As a member of the Management Team, the PPC participates in organization-wide management activities.

  • Provides leadership to our Mental Health programs in planning, developing, implementing and evaluating quality improvement initiatives.
  • Develops, implements and evaluates staff orientation and education activities.
  • Facilitates and expedites continuous learning and professional development among nursing and allied health staff through educating, coaching and mentoring.
  • Provides consultation to teams related to complex clinical issues, standards of care and best practices.
  • Maintains up to date knowledge on evidenced based practices and standards to mentor and role model to others.
  • Develops, reviews and revises policies and procedures related to professional practice and clinical care, and provides supporting education and evaluation.
  • Develops, implements and monitors quality indicators
  • Supports program planning, development and evaluation to optimize client outcomes and experience.
  • Promotes an environment characterized by continuous learning, innovation, and interprofessional collaboration.
  • As a member of the Office of Professional Practice, collaborates with the other PPCs to plan and organize corporate quality management and educational initiatives
  • Provides administrative back up to the Patient Care Managers within the Program in their absence.
  • Participates in community and regional initiatives that have a direct relationship to the Mental Health Program.
  • Facilitates and promotes staff to attain/retain recognized professional credentials as it relates to their positions in the Program.
  • Responsible for specific related projects, as assigned.
Qualifications
  • BScN or BN required
  • Master's Degree in Nursing, Education or Health Administration preferred
  • Active member in good standing with College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)
  • Certification with the Canadian Nurses' Association in Mental Health / Psychiatric Nursing (CPMHNc) preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years clinical experience in acute mental health settings preferred
  • Knowledge and expertise with least restraint practices and non-violent crisis intervention
  • Knowledge of mental health and concurrent disorders standards of practice and evidence-based guidelines
  • Demonstrated quality improvement strategies
  • Ability to lead change
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, collaboration and team leadership skills
  • Demonstrated research or program evaluation skills
  • Skilled in the principles of adult learning and experienced in teaching adult learners
  • Training and experience in utilizing quality improvement methods such as LEAN
  • Proven track record of successful implementation strategies, projects and partnerships
  • Experience creating, delivering, and evaluating training materials.

Hours: Monday to Friday - 7.5 hour day shifts - 0800 - 1600 (Hours are subject to change based on operational needs)

Salary: $51.537 to $63.851
