OVERVIEW

Reporting to the senior lawyers within the Legal Affairs department, this position will support the management of the legal affairs of the Toronto Blue Jays and Rogers Centre stadium.

The junior lawyer will primarily be responsible for:

  • Managing portions of certain internal review processes (including, legal review of contests, marketing materials, promotional initiatives and ticket product sales),
  • As directed, assisting senior lawyers with reviewing, drafting and advising on Toronto Blue Jays and Rogers Centre contracts, initiatives and business arrangements, and
  • Researching, analyzing and working on specific business, legal and contractual issues while collaborating with organizational departments.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • As directed by the senior lawyers, drafting, reviewing and revising certain Toronto Blue Jays and Rogers Centre contracts, arrangements and business documents, sponsorship and licensing contracts, marketing and promotional initiatives, contest rules and related materials, license agreements, services agreements (including software-as-a-service), other specialized contractor and vendor agreements and annual ticket product terms and conditions.
  • When required, working directly with the organization's functional departments and senior lawyers on the Legal Affairs team to provide input and advice on business & legal considerations, and manage and assist with negotiation processes.
  • Over time, it is anticipated that the junior lawyer will assume primary departmental responsibility over the following functions:
    • Managing the legal component of the organization's contest development and review process and participating directly in the development of specific contests, associated rules and regulations and in-market creative,
    • Providing legal review and guidance in connection with advertising, marketing and promotions to ensure regulatory compliance, consistency of messaging, management of brand and other matters, and
    • Managing the development of annual ticket product terms and conditions and associated sales processes.
  • Managing, researching and assisting with unique legal and business matters, compliance endeavours and business improvement initiatives as assigned by senior lawyers. Examples include assessing matters and legislation relating to consumer protection, ticket sales, privacy, anti-spam, sports betting, accessibility, human rights, intellectual property and other matters as directed.
  • Managing and coordinating certain document collection, review and action items in connection with claims and litigation-related matters.
  • To the extent related to other responsibilities, the junior lawyer will need to be familiar with and ensure organizational compliance with:
    • Business relationships and agreements affecting the Toronto Blue Jays and Rogers Centre,
    • Applicable regulatory and legal frameworks, and
    • Policies and agreements of Major League Baseball and its member Clubs, in respect of matters such as licensing, corporate sponsorships and interactive media rights.
  • Manage record-keeping for contracts, documents, communication and internal processes of relevance to the role.
  • Other projects as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be legally able to work in Canada.
  • J.D. required.
  • Must be a member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
  • 2+ years of experience at a major law firm and/or in-house legal department, with a focus on commercial transactions.
  • Demonstrated experience with contract drafting and negotiation in a variety of transactional contexts, including with and without the use of templates and precedents.
  • Business acumen, decision-making ability and ability to assess and evaluate business decisions and alternative deal structures.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to summarize issues succinctly for seniors lawyers and articulate advice to business counterparts in a manner that is easily digestible and understandable.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain relationships.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience dealing with legal counsel and legal issues, preferably within a varied business context.
  • Ability to work under pressure and creatively problem solve under tight deadlines.
  • Strong work ethic and ability to work outside customary business hours (including evenings, weekends and holidays, as required).
  • Knowledge of the game of baseball, the Toronto Blue Jays and Rogers Centre stadium is considered an asset.
