Nature of Position

The Early Years Family Support Worker (FSW) provides a range of supports aimed at promoting the well-being of children and their families who have identified the need for increased support. As part of a multi-disciplinary team, and reporting to the Early Years Consultant, the Early Years Family Support Worker provides support services to children, families, caregivers, and other community services providers with the goal of integrating Early Years Mental Health into existing early years support services to improve the overall wellness of children by providing prevention and intervention services as soon as possible in a child's life. The Family Support Worker uses and promotes a culturally safe, trauma informed, and family centered approach. The Early Years FSW is familiar with and participates in ensuring that the strategic goals of the agency are met and adheres to inclusion powell river policies and procedures, understands the service principles, CARF standards, ministry guidelines and ensures that these form the basis for all work performed.

  • Support and implement individualized plans developed by the core team within the family home, school, and other involved community settings, and maintain objective and timely documentation, records and reporting in keeping with inclusion powell river's standards.
  • Work constructively alongside other trained professionals who have direct involvement with the child, their families, caregivers, and other relevant professional or community members. This includes determining behavioral change goals, developing plans, and the systematic use of positive behavior support. Behavior intervention experience is an asset.
  • Assist with behavioral support services in the home or other community settings, which may include child specific training, hands on demonstration of child management techniques, and contribution to community awareness and network building about the needs and responses of children with behavioral challenges.
  • Services provided are culturally appropriate and promote a safe, healthy, and non-threatening environment that instills a sense of dignity and self-respect, and which motivates, assists and instructs families throughout the service period.
  • Responds immediately to emergencies including incidents of child abuse, in accordance with Ministry guidelines, inclusion powell river Policies and the Operations Manual always using common sense and good judgement.
Required Qualifications

2 years of post-secondary studies towards a degree, diploma or certificate in a related human services field or equivalent discipline PLUS a minimum of 2 years or more of related work experience.

OR

1 year of post-secondary studies towards a degree, diploma or certificate in a related human services field or equivalent PLUS a minimum of 3 years or more of related work experience.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

  • A valid WCB-approved First Aid Certificate (OFA Level 1)
  • A valid WCB-approved Child Safe Certificate
  • Successful candidate must have a valid BC driver's license and access to reliable transportation
