The Survey/CAD Technician is responsible for providing support in field surveying operations, maintaining and operating GNSS and Robotic total station equipment, and producing accurate data for construction projects. The role involves both fieldwork and office duties, such as conducting surveys, preparing CAD drawings, managing machine control systems, and providing technical support to field teams. This position collaborates with project management, estimating, and field operations teams to ensure precision in construction layouts, data processing, and machine control systems.
Your day-to-day will look like:
- Operate and maintain GNSS and Robotic total station surveying equipment.
- Configure, calibrate, and troubleshoot machine control systems for excavators, dozers, and other heavy equipment.
- Provide field support for survey equipment, ensuring optimal performance and accuracy.
- Prepare and manage field data files for construction projects using AutoDesk Civil 3D and other relevant software.
- Process and analyze survey data for volume assessments, QA/QC, and as-built documentation.
- Create accurate CAD drawings and update them based on field data and project requirements.
- Perform inspections, testing, diagnostics, and repairs on electronic devices and components such as pipe lasers, laser levels, GPS receivers, GPS antennas, display screens, and data collectors.
- Use various test equipment including oscilloscopes, multimeters, and collimation tools to diagnose and resolve issues with surveying equipment.
- Install, calibrate, and repair machine control systems consisting of electronic, mechanical, and hydraulic components.
- Troubleshoot issues related to machine control systems and ensure proper operation in the field.
- Assist with managing and maintaining survey equipment, ensuring timely repairs, calibrations, and availability.
- Maintain logs for survey asset usage, maintenance, and calibration records.
- Prepare and submit technician reports and other relevant information based on the work completed, ensuring accurate documentation for each task.
- Provide technical support and training to field personnel on survey equipment and machine control systems.
- Document survey procedures, results, and equipment maintenance for future reference.
- Work closely with field crews, project managers, and estimating teams to ensure seamless communication and project flow.
- Assist with resolving technical issues that arise during surveying or data processing.
You bring the following qualifications, technical and interpersonal skills:
Preferred Qualifications:
- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.
- A technical trade program in surveying or electronics is preferred.
- 2+ years of experience in land surveying, civil construction, or a related field.
- Proficiency in AutoDesk Civil 3D, Topcon Magnet Suite, and GNSS/Robotic Total Station systems.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and work in outdoor conditions.
Preferred Technical Skills:
- Proficient in land and hydrographic surveying using terrestrial and satellite-based positioning systems.
- Knowledge of civil construction, including utilities, earthworks, and road building.
- Proficient in using AutoDesk Civil 3D, Topcon Magnet Suite, and Microsoft Office for data preparation and processing.
- Experience with the installation, calibration, and repair of machine control systems on heavy machinery.
- Strong understanding of survey QA/QC processes and volume assessments.
- Ability to perform inspections, testing, diagnostics, and repairs on electronic surveying equipment.
Interpersonal Skills:
- Strong customer service orientation, with the ability to communicate effectively with both internal and external clients.
- Proactive in ensuring job knowledge is current and staying up-to-date with emerging technologies and best practices.
