ABOUT THE ROLE
The Fort McKay First Nation is seeking a highly dedicated professional with excellent interpersonal skills to join our team as Advisor, Human Resources. Reporting directly to the Director of Human Resources, this position will be an essential part of the HR team, supporting various human resources functions within the organization. The incumbent will promote and support positive organizational work environments by providing advice and guidance to leaders and employees on human resources related best practices and functions. This is a full-time permanent position and is based on seventy-five (75) hours bi-weekly, located in Fort McKay, AB.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Build and maintain trusted working relationships with client departments.
  • Lead and assist with managing HR projects and programs including developing project plans and business cases; providing research and analysis; providing input and support on process improvements.
  • Research and recommend performance evaluation methods (e.g. employee appraisal systems).
  • Design and help implement organizational human resources policies.
  • Train hiring managers on progressive discipline and application of organizational policies.
  • Conduct internal surveys to gather employee feedback and identify areas for improvement.
  • Monitor key recruitment metrics, such as employee turnover, vacancy rates, and retention rates.
  • Address employee requests and potential issues (e.g. grievances).
  • Work with the Senior Recruiter and Communications in organizing employer branding initiatives.
  • Act as the point of contact for hiring managers, employees, and other HR team members.
  • Evaluate employee benefit plans (e.g. group life insurance, sickness and accident benefits, health insurance, leaves, and retirement pension plans) and work closely with the HR staff and Payroll & Benefits.
  • Use and assist in the management of human resource information systems including SAGE and Orange HRM
  • Handle employee relations, contract negotiation and administration.
  • Assist with the day-to-day efficient operation of the Human Resources office, including transfers, salary increases and administration of all human resources processes.
  • Suggest new HR technology solutions to improve day-to-day operations (e.g. Timekeeping and HRIS software).
  • Organize and track probation, semi-annual, and annual reviews for all employees.
  • Assist with development of compensation guidelines.
  • Review and update job descriptions.
  • Support the various stages of the recruitment process including preparing job advertisements, interviewing applicants, conducting reference checks, and facilitating orientation.
  • Provide advice regarding compensation practices and exceptions available to attract key talent.
  • Provide compensation recommendations for new hires.
  • Lead the exit interview process, track recruitment and retention data, as required.
  • Provides proactive advice and guidance regarding employment legislation and human resource best practices.
  • Prepare reports as required.
  • Perform other duties as required.
KEY REQUIREMENTS
  • Degree or diploma in Human Resources, Business Administration or a related field is required. A degree is preferred.
  • A Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation is considered an asset.
  • Five (5) years of similar and progressive work experience in a human resource generalist role.
  • Knowledge of employment legislation and human resource best practices
  • Ability to exercise discretion, professionalism, uphold confidentiality, and remain calm and neutral in sensitive situations.
  • Clean Criminal Record Check is required.
  • Valid class five (5) Driver's License & Clean Driver's Abstract required.
  • Experience working in a First Nations community including knowledge of First Nations culture, traditions and values is an asset
