As a Safety Coordinator at Steel Technologies Canada, you are entrusted with the vital responsibility of safeguarding the wellbeing of all teammates and facilitating the smooth functioning of operations. You will work closely with various departments to identify potential hazards, conduct risk assessments, and provide training and guidance on safe work practices.
How you'll contribute to our company:
- Conduct new hire safety orientations
- Conduct on the job safety training for new hires and job transfers
- Maintain training records and execute the training requirements
- Assist in all safety related incident investigations, ensure completion of all reporting and manage implementation of all corrective measures
- Ensure Safety Management System is implemented at the facility
- Support all internal and external safety audits/inspections as needed
- Schedule hearing tests and noise monitoring assessments as needed
- Observe general work practices and enforce safety policies and procedures. When an unsafe work practice is observed, coach employees on safe work procedures incl. initiating the corrective actions
- Recommend measures to protect workers from potentially hazardous work methods, processes, or materials
- Maintain the Job Safety Analysis program
- Ensure the implementation of company's PPE program and oversee its ongoing maintenance.
- Schedule, lead, and document all safety related meetings
- Post and communicate safety messages/alerts from corporate safety as needed
- Facilitate the Safety Rewards Program at the plant
- Monitor compliance with environmental health and safety program
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Post-secondary school diploma or degree in Occupational Health & Safety or related field of study
- Forklift, Overhead Crane experience preferred
- Certified First Responder (First Aid, CPR, AED)
- Certified member of Ontario Joint Health and Safety Committee Manufacturing sector
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to walk and stand for prolonged periods of time
- Ability to use tape measure, micrometers, and calipers

- Ability to work independently to analyze and evaluate problems and solutions
- Ability to readily respond to emergencies
- Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time
- Ability to travel between STC plants
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Ability to correctly retrieve and input data using the company prescribed safety management system
- Knowledge of and ability to comply with safety rules and requirements of Ontario
- Experience with investigations, inspections, and job hazard analyses.
