Position Summary

This is a full-time position averaging a minimum of 40 hours per week. Reporting to the Production and Area Team Leader(s), Mill Labourers will be required to work safely while performing a variety of tasks around the mill which include housekeeping and operating mobile equipment. You will be required to train in the safe operation of aerial lifts, fork trucks, sweepers, and bucket loaders as well as cross-train in production activities. This is an entry level position in a unionized environment with a variable shift schedule including days, nights, and weekends based on operating needs.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Understand and practice all Mill Safe Work Procedures for all related mill services equipment and work procedures.
  • Understand, follow and safely practice lockout procedures.
  • Assist maintenance team members as directed.
  • Follow and perform preventative maintenance procedures on all equipment, including daily and weekly maintenance schedules.
  • Operate mobile equipment, such as but not limited to, small fork truck, large fork truck, Genie lift, Genie boom, sweeper and the L20.
  • Visually inspecting conditions of forklifts, Genie lifts, floor sweepers, and other related equipment.
  • Communicating, both orally and in writing, to team leaders and/or maintenance team members regarding safety incidents, inadequate equipment conditions and other maintenance requirements are observed.
  • Maintaining all doorways, walkways, stairs and platforms free of obstructions and unnecessary debris.
  • Cleaning up excess strands and debris from process and other clean up duties as directed by the shift team leader.
  • Being readily available to assist the shift millwright or electrician with trouble shooting and problem solving.
  • Assisting the Quality Assurance team members with weekly cleaning of the Blenders.
  • Ensuring that World Class housekeeping standards are continuously maintained throughout the plant and yard area.
  • Relieve in the areas of Strand Preparation and Finishing & Packaging or other areas as assigned by the Team Leader or designate.
  • Collect and recycle all discarded metal strapping.
  • Check propane cabinet to ensure adequate amount of bottles filled.
  • Participates in injury prevention by performing exercises on or off the job to maintain a prescribed level of fitness required to perform this job.
  • Reports immediately all injuries, hazards and all ‘near-misses', which could have resulted in a severe injury or property damage, to his or her Team Leader, supervisor, or other, as the case may be.
  • Clean in areas of the mill normally cleaned by team members working in such areas.
  • Operate additional mobile equipment as necessary such as, but not limited to, chainsaw, Volvo bucket loader, and railcar mover if trained
  • Complete production reports

Minimum Qualifications

  • Grade 12 Diploma;
  • Valid Driver's license;
  • Experience in an industrial environment an asset;
  • Ability to work at heights;
  • A positive attitude, ability to work safely, mechanical aptitude, and willingness to learn.
